Israeli barrage of Gaza continues with strike on PM’s office

Sunday, July 2, 2006

Israel has continued its barrage of the Gaza Strip with an attack by a helicopter gunship on the office of the Palestinian prime minister. The attack, which left the building ablaze, injured three Palestinian security guards and was described by the prime minister, Ismail Haniya, as senseless. “This is the policy of the jungle and arrogance,” Haniya told Reuters. “They have targeted a symbol for the Palestinian people.”

Israel claims the attack on Gaza, codenamed Operation Summer Rains, is to pressure the Palestinian government into freeing Cpl. Gilad Shalit, the Israeli tank gunner Israel describes as having been kidnapped by Palestinian militants on Monday.

Other Israeli strikes on Saturday night hit a school in Gaza City and Hamas facilities in the town of Jabalia in the north of the strip where one 34-year-old Hamas operative was killed and another wounded.

International participants showcase different industry cultures at 2008 Taipei Game Show

Friday, January 25, 2008

B2B Trade Area of Taipei Game Show, criticized by trade buyers last year, but accompanied with 2008 Taiwan Digital Content Forum, moved to the second floor at Taipei World Trade Center for world-wide participants with a better exchange atmosphere this year.

Not only local OBMs (Softstar Entertainment, Soft-World International Corp., International Games System Corp., …, etc.) but also companies from New Zealand, Canada, Japan, Hong Kong, and South Korea showcased different specialists with multiple styles. Especially on South Korea, participated members from G? Trade Show (Game Show & Trade, All-Round, aka Gstar) showcased gaming industry of South Korea and the G? upcoming at this November with brochures.

In the 2-days Digital Content Forum, world-class experts not only shared industry experiences, members from Taiwan Gaming Industry Association also discussed and forecasted marketing models for gaming industry. With participations from governmental, industrial, and academical executives world-wide, this forum helps them gained precious experiences of digital content industry from several countries.

According to the Taipei Computer Association, the show and forum organizer, the digital content industry in Taiwan was apparently grown up recent years as Minister of Economic Affairs of the Republic of China Steve Ruey-long Chen said at Opening Ceremony yesterday. Without R&Ds from cyber-gaming, and basic conceptions from policies and copyright issues, this (digital content) industry will be fallen down in Taiwan. If this industry wanted to be grown up in sustainability, gaming OBMs in Taiwan should independently produce different and unique games and change market style to market brands and games to the world.

Gastric bypass surgery performed by remote control

Sunday, August 21, 2005

A robotic system at Stanford Medical Center was used to perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery successfully with a theoretically similar rate of complications to that seen in standard operations. However, as there were only 10 people in the experimental group (and another 10 in the control group), this is not a statistically significant sample.

If this surgical procedure is as successful in large-scale studies, it may lead the way for the use of robotic surgery in even more delicate procedures, such as heart surgery. Note that this is not a fully automated system, as a human doctor controls the operation via remote control. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a treatment for obesity.

There were concerns that doctors, in the future, might only be trained in the remote control procedure. Ronald G. Latimer, M.D., of Santa Barbara, CA, warned “The fact that surgeons may have to open the patient or might actually need to revert to standard laparoscopic techniques demands that this basic training be a requirement before a robot is purchased. Robots do malfunction, so a backup system is imperative. We should not be seduced to buy this instrument to train surgeons if they are not able to do the primary operations themselves.”

There are precedents for just such a problem occurring. A previous “new technology”, the electrocardiogram (ECG), has lead to a lack of basic education on the older technology, the stethoscope. As a result, many heart conditions now go undiagnosed, especially in children and others who rarely undergo an ECG procedure.

Peruvian necklace identified as oldest gold artifact in the Americas

Tuesday, April 1, 2008

The oldest known gold artifact in the Americas is a necklace from Peru, according to University of Arizona anthropology professor Mark Aldenderfer. The necklace comes from a village in the Jiskairumoko range near Lake Titicaca and consists of gold that had been hammered and rolled into nine cylindrical beads, then strung with turquoise on a wool string.

Radiocarbon dating places the manufacture of the necklace from 2155 to 1936 B.C., which makes this item about 600 years older than the next oldest gold artifact that has been discovered the Americas and the oldest example of metalworking of any kind in the Americas.

Gold metallurgy is almost always associated with agricultural societies. Since the materials used in the necklace are not found in the Titicaca basin, the existence of the necklace implies the region had trade routes and a hereditary elite.

Although this discovery was made in 2004, Professor Alenderfer and his team delayed publication in order to have the gold chemically analyzed and to minimize the risk of looters damaging the site before excavation was complete.

Heat Shrinkable Cable Accessories Are A Big Part Of Our Society}

Heat shrinkable cable accessories are a big part of our society

by

Al Yamuna DensonsHeat shrinkable cables and accessories are one of the most vital inventions in the world of physics till date. They are extensively used in various parts of science. This is basically a cable which contracts when it is heated. These cables are primarily used for insulation but can also be used on joints which have not been soldered.Types of Heat Shrinkable Cables:These cables were initially developed in various colours for usage in modifying computer interiors. Later, UV reactive and luminous reactive cables were also developed to supply the growing market demand. Neoprene, Vitron and Kynar are few special types of the cablewhich hold great qualities and tremendous strength.Benefits of Heat Shrinkable accessories:Heat shrink tubes, caps, boots and sleeves are all available in various colours and thickness for utility. The Heat shrinkable cable accessories are essentially used to give protection from environmental dangers like chemicals, weather and fire. These cables are largely used in industrial factories where wires need repairing, insulation and termination. The boots are necessary for bridging sealed wires and connectors in electrical products. These are coated with an adhesive which allows them to seal and protect from water. Apart from the industries, these Heat shrinkable boots are used in military and marine fields as well. The sleeves are also very vital as they are manufactured with three layers of coating which when melt allows to cover the joints of wires or pipes completely. After the cooldown process is over, the adhesive inside helps the sleeve to bond tightly with the wire joints. Power cable accessories system is largely benefitted from these accessories.Applications of Heat Shrinkable Cable Accessories: These accessories are used in severe conditions proving their functionality every time. One of the most dangerous conditions where they used is active nuclear environments. The cables are used in this environment and have to provide secured functions in times of accidents. Before installation, primarily all theHeat Shrinkable cable accessories are well tested for qualification of usage. The cables are testedfor surviving nuclear accidents, exposure to gamma radiation and high temperature. The material basing this heat shrink technology is polythene based molecules. Due to certain scientific calculations, these molecules can be heated up to high temperatures without melting. This exceeds the regular crystalline point of melting. In this high temperature, the cable can be expanded and with the decrease in temperature, the shapes are made solid and permanent. In recent times, a particular rise in Cable Accessories Manufacturers from UAE has been recorded. The Heat shrinkable cable accessories are an example of scientific progress. They have continued to support technology till date. These are used in various paths and are contributing in massive amount. First winter snowfall in New Zealand

Saturday, June 4, 2005

Overnight Friday a Southerly storm brought snow to both the Southern Alps and the central North Island mountains of New Zealand for the first time this year, closing major roads and stranding travellers at the start of the Queens Birthday holiday weekend. Police and the AA urged motorists to drive with extra care and to the conditions this weekend.

In the North Island, State Highway 1 between Waiouru and Rangipo, the Desert Road was closed by deep snow at 3 PM on Friday afternoon. Other roads in the area, including other parts of State Highway 1 between Bulls and Turangi, State Highway 4, via National Park, and 49, via Ohakune, were closed at 8 PM.

These road closures stopped all traffic through the centre of the North Island. About 200 travellers were reported to have spent the night at the Waiouru Army Camp, being accommodated in the Marae and the Barracks. Grit trucks and snow ploughs worked overnight to clear the snow and reopen roads, with the Desert Road finally being reopened about 12:30 PM Saturday.

Together with a slip threatening to close State Highway 3 in the Manawatu Gorge and damage to State Highway 2 after floods in the Bay of Plenty a couple of weeks ago, the only reliable alternative route for travellers around the North Island was via Wanganui and Taranaki.

In the South Island, Police and the AA advised that chains were essential when travelling over the mountain passes.

Yesterday, Mount Hutt skifield announced it would be opening Saturday morning. Early Saturday morning, skiers were reported to be queuing at the gates of Mount Hutt skifield, eager to get the first opportunity to hit the slopes in 2005. Other South Island ski fields were also indicating June opening dates.

The weather outlook is for cold southerly winds and rain over the Queens Birthday holiday weekend, with snow down to 400m in the South Island.

Appalachia Mountains coal company plays State politics

Tuesday, August 2, 2005

Massey Energy Co., the fourth largest coal producer in the U.S., filed a federal lawsuit against the Governor of West Virginia, Joe Manchin.

Massey’s CEO Don Blankenship alleged that Gov. Manchin acted in retaliation against the company’s coal mining operations because the company spent $650,000 in an advertising campaign to defeat the governor sponsored pension bond proposal. The $5.5 billion bond proposal, intended to shore up the state’s sagging pension plan, was defeated in a special election held in June.

The Massey lawsuit, filed last Tuesday on July 26 in the U.S. District Court in the W.V. southern district, was referred to by Gov. Manchin as having less to do with the bond proposal than with the newly increased state “severance tax” on coal. Nearly 40 million tons of coal production will be subject to the 56-cent tax.

According to Blankenship, that tax amounts to $22.4 million in additional costs for the company, but he denied the increase has anything to do with the lawsuit.

The company reported profits that almost tripled during the second quarter compared to a year ago. Of the company’s rosy earnings picture, Blankenship urged states to “show some frugality” by not placing tax burdens on coal to solve state budget shortfalls. He said his company is “playing a role” because there was no need for the bond sale and the state can afford to make payments into the pension system.

Blankenship acknowledged during a conference call the now-rescinded June 30 permit by the W.V. Department of Environment Protection (DEP). At issue was the department’s permit for mining operations near the Marsh Fork Elementary School, in Sundial, W.V. The school rests at the base of a mountain selected by Massey for “Mountain Top Removal” (MTR) mining techniques. Along with the mining equipment, a coal preparation plant and a sludge pond were established on the mountain. Protest groups, mainly the Coal River Mountain Watch and Mountain Justice Summer, presented a list of demands to Massey officials that included shutting down the preparation plant, ceasing all MTR mining above the Marsh Fork Elementary School, and abandoning plans for a second coal silo near the school. They also ask that the Marsh Fork school be cleaned up or relocated. The state permit for a second coal storage silo was rescinded by the DEP the same day Massey filed the Manchin lawsuit.

Gov. Manchin in June said that Blankenship could expect tougher state scrutiny of his business affairs since the Massey media campaign against the pension bond proposal. “I think that is justified now, since Don has jumped in there with his personal wealth trying to direct public policy,” he said at an appearance at an American Electric Power event in Putnam County.

Ease The Pain Without Addiction At The Back &Amp; Neck Care Center

byAlma Abell

Back and neck injuries happen quite often. A fall or car accident can cause serious issues that can lead to long-lasting pain in the back and neck. Even poor posture can lead to serious issues in these areas. Far too often, these injuries are to soft tissue areas that are difficult to diagnose and even more difficult to correct by a primary doctor. The pain from these issues can last a lifetime and cause serious limitations to one’s daily activities. These limitations can severely decrease a person’s quality of life and, sometimes, limit their ability to work. This can also lead to other issues, such as depression. Many common treatments can pose further complications and limitations. However, treatment at the Back & Neck Care Center can be another option.

Very often, treatments for back and neck pain consist of pain medications. These medications come with a plethora of side-effects, such as drowsiness, that can compromise a person’s ability to perform daily activities. Although the pain may be relieved, a person may still be unable to get out and enjoy their life. In addition, the body adjusts to pain medication over time. This can often require the person to take more pain medication to treat the same pain. Long-term use of pain medications can also lead to addiction. This can be a difficult problem for anyone to handle. The Back & Neck Care Center provides alternative treatments for pain that can lessen or eliminate one’s dependency on pain medications.

Chiropractic treatment can be very beneficial in treating back and neck pain. Often, this pain is caused by misaligned bones, muscles, tendons, and nerves. Manipulation of these areas can help realign the area to promote healing. The stimulation also promotes circulation and helps with healing as well. In addition to manipulation, a patient is also instructed in how to perform range-of-motion exercises, depending on their injury and pain, to improve proper use and promote healing. For many patients, dependency on pain medication can be reduced or eliminated. It can also allow a person to return to a pain-free life. For more information, you can Click Here.
