Drill Presses

by

shaguftaFor the quickest and most precise drilling the drill press is what you should look for (though it is not portable still it serves a lot of purpose). Due to its versatility to finish plenty of jobs the drill press has become an essential item on floor of any shop.

The functioning of drill press is very easy. It uses a fixed drilling head positioned above moveable workbench. Throat capacity is the most essential part as it measures the size of the workable area. Drill Press throat is nothing but the distance between the bit and the rear of the workbench. The distance determines the size of a drill press the drill bit is from the column, a 12″ drill press would be capable of drilling a hole in the center of a 12″ disk. Initially the design of the Drill Press was a metalworking tool, but is now commonly used to work with a variety of materials.

Keyed chuck is the important part of the drill press. There are three holes around the chuck that the key fits into, mainly to prevent a bit from slipping. After tightening the bit move to the next hole and tighten again, then move to the third hole and tighten again. The Accessories available allow the Drill Press to complete a wide array of day-to-day jobs on time and efficiently. The work involves performing as sanding drums, rotary planners, hole saws and mortising equipment. The torque, which is incomparable with the portable counterpart, is the best part of drill press. It is perfectly designed for making holes. It is very competent to handle the job with precision and accuracy that you can count on it with closed eyes.

The drill press can be customized to serve different purposes. Bench top drill press is the most common drill presses available in the market (mount directly to a workbench or on their own stands. Their compact size makes bench-top models good choices for small shops), Floor Model Drill Press (usually have more powerful motors, more attachments/accessories and greater material handling capacities than bench-tops. The extra versatility makes floor models good choices for serious DIY and commercial shops), Radial Drill Press (have a movable spindle that can be adjusted to the work. This type of machine is convenient to use on large and heavy work or where many holes are to be drilled since the work does not have to be readjusted for each hole) and Portable Drill Press (yield the least power, but are convenient for small jobs and travel. For someone without a functioning wood shop, this tool can be necessary).

Safety norms should be the topmast priority while operating on any mechanical tool like the drill press first. Always follow these methods for complete safety while you work. Make it a point to use wear eye protection while working on the floor. Run your drill press at correct cutting speeds. For handling small materials Use a vise or clamp. Always use a brush to Remove waste chips and never by hand. Slow down on the pressure applied as bit breaks through material. Never drill with too much pressure, if the bit is dull sharpen or replace it. Shut off machine if drill binds; turn chuck backwards by hand to free bit. While drilling deep holes withdraw drill to clear chips frequently. Take out drill chuck key right away after using. Keep floor area around tool clear.

Let’s Talk About Basement Refinishing

By Glover Paul

An unfinished basement can be one of the most scariest and spooky areas of the house and that’s probably because they never really were designed for living in the first place. Historically, the basement was designed as a storage area – purposely kept dark and cold to preserve perishable items like food and drinks. Today, we don’t need our basements to preserve perishables – we have refrigerators for that! So why are so many basements still unfinished?

Who knows. The fact is that the basement is one of the largest rooms in a house and it has huge potential for fantasy fulfillment. With today’s advancements in home improvement, there’s really no excuse for anyone doing laundry or storing unused toys in a creepy unfinished basement filled with unsightly pipes, exposed wires, and yucky spiders.

Typically the same width and length of the entire home, the basement could be viewed as a second home, an at-home-business office, a workout gym, play area for the kids, or even your very own miniature golf course. It’s potential is as wide as the living area upstairs and if carefully planned, can double the fun of interior living.

Your contractor can help you come up with a plan that could make the basement area indistinguishable from the upstairs area by doing a few simple things:

1. Insulate the Basement. Although heat rises, a lot of energy is lost in the basement because it’s rather porous compared to the rest of the house. After all, it’s surrounded by the outside ground and it’s prone to minute cracks, water leaks, and air drafts from non-sealed joints and crevices. Insulating a basement will help keep that heat in the basement during the winter months and allow you to enjoy doing laundry downstairs as if you were upstairs standing next to a warm oven.

2. Hang drywall. Nothing brightens up a room more than fresh new drywall. Drywall is usually white or off white and it does a tremendous job of hiding the dark gray stone walls that you might be used to looking at in the basement. Of course drywall isn’t just for walls – your contractor can hang it on the ceiling as well and turn a dreary place into a light-filled room.

3. Install carpeting, wood, or tile Flooring. This is a great step towards transforming a cold cement rectangular prism into an inviting space to spend some quality time. A little insulation between your new flooring and that cold cement floor that you now have will help keep your toes as warm as they are inside your favorite houseshoes.

4. Put in decorative lighting. Soft studio lighting embedded into a sound-proof ceiling gives what was once a very hard-looking environment – a soft new look.

These very basic changes are low cost additions and give you a platform for adding complimentary furniture, appliances, an entertainment center, or anything else that your heart desires. Just remember – it all starts with a solid plan and a good contractor.

Economic policy makers conclude Washington meetings

Monday, April 14, 2008

This weekend, April 12–13, the joint Development Committee of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) held its annual Spring Meeting in Washington, D.C.

The Group of Seven (G7), which is comprised of the economic policy makers from the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, and Japan, held its annual meeting on Friday, April 11. This meeting, which rotates locations, was also held in Washington, D.C.

The Development Committee meeting ended on Sunday, with a call from the economic leaders for assistance to the countries which been adversely affected by rising food prices. Economic growth has slowed to its lowest rate in five years, while the rising costs of food and energy have not slowed.

Robert Zoellick, the president of the World Bank, said, “We have to put our money where our mouth is. Now. So that we can put food into hungry mouths. It’s as stark as that.” He called for US$500 million in emergency funds for the United Nations’s World Food Programme by May 1, 2008.

“All that has been done [in the past decade] can be undone very rapidly by the crisis coming from the increase in food prices,” said Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the managing director of the IMF.

“Children will be suffering from malnutrition, with consequences for all their lives,” he said. He cited the growing use of land for biofuels as contributing to rising food costs. In the end growing violence and civil unrest could be a result.

Strauss-Kahn further warned that eventually it could become “not only a humanitarian question,” but could also affect developed nations by leading to trade imbalances.

Specifically cited as a current example, was Haiti, where just this weekend, violence escalated resulting in the death of a United Nations peacekeeper and the ousting of Prime Minister Jacques-Édouard Alexis.

United States Secretary of the Treasury Henry Paulson cautioned that affected countries “need to resist the temptation of price controls and consumption subsidies that are generally not effective and efficient methods of protecting vulnerable groups.”

We have to put our money where our mouth is. Now. So that we can put food into hungry mouths. It’s as stark as that.

Price controls and subsidies “tend to create fiscal burdens and economic distortions while often providing aid to higher-income consumers or commercial interests other than the intended beneficiaries,” Paulson said.

In their Friday statement, the G7 said “there have been at times sharp fluctuations in major currencies, and we are concerned about their possible implications for economic and financial stability.” This marked the first time since the February 2004 meeting in Boca Raton, Florida, that the wording on foreign exchange has been altered.

The G7 presented a plan to strengthen regulation of capital markets. They urged financial firms to “fully” disclose their at-risk investments and improve capital reserves. While the G7 did not outline new monetary or fiscal policies, it did promise action “as appropriate.” The timetable for the plan is 100 days.

While action is unlikely in the short run, they are probably already considering a pre-emptive move in foreign exchange markets to slow the dollar’s decline.

The head of G7 Market Economics at Tullett Prebon, Lena Komileva, observed, “The implicit message is that the G7 is moving closer towards concerted action in the event that persistent volatility in the foreign exchange market presents new risk of systemic failure in the financial industry.”

“While action is unlikely in the short run, they are probably already considering a pre-emptive move in foreign exchange markets to slow the dollar’s decline,” added Komileva.

Economists at Goldman Sachs told their clients, “After a period where the possibility of G7 policy intervention seemed very remote, providing no counterweight to the dollar depreciation forces, we are moving towards a regime where G7 intervention is a more real possibility.”

Thai anti-government leaders escape capture

Saturday, April 17, 2010

In a new setback to the Thai government’s efforts to ease mounting political tensions, protest leaders escaped from their hotel Friday after security forces arrived to arrest them.

One, Arisman Pongruangrong, climbed down three floors using a rope, and was rushed away by supporters thronging the building. The police say Arisman led recent rallies at the national parliament, the election commission, and satellite transmission bases.

Officials earlier Friday said the government is preparing to arrest people linked to violent clashes with security forces last Saturday.

Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban, Thai security chief, announced the raid on the hotel as it was unfolding, saying that a Special Forces unit had closed in around a downtown Bangkok hotel.

“As I am speaking, the government’s special team is surrounding the SC Park Hotel, where we have learned that there are terrorists and some of their leaders hiding,” Suthep said.

A spokesman for the governing Democrat Party, Baranuj Smuthararaks, says arrest warrants have been issued for those suspected of being involved in the violence. Some of the suspects have been identified from photos taken during the clashes.

“Right now the government’s focusing on issuing warrants for acts of terrorism by the people who fortunately have been captured in action [in photos] by both the local and international media,” he said.

According to the New York Times, as many as five protest leaders had been staying at the same hotel as Pongruangrong. Those leaders later appeared together at a protest rally in Bangkok.

“I would like to thank all of the people who saved me,” Arisman said. “You have saved democracy.”The government says armed men infiltrated protester ranks Saturday and fired on troops trying to disperse a rally. Five soldiers and 19 protesters died during the clashes.

Thailand is facing its most severe political crisis in almost 20 years. The anti-government movement, led by the United Democratic Front against Dictatorship or UDD, demands that the government step down and call fresh elections.

UDD supporters, known as red shirts, have held protests in Bangkok for more than a month.

The UDD largely supports former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in a coup in 2006 and remains overseas to avoid a jail sentence for corruption. Mr. Thaksin has strong support among the rural and urban poor, as well among some sections of the army and police.

Some parties in the governing coalition want to set a clear time frame for elections to ease tensions. But the government says it will only call elections once the political situation has cooled.

Swedish minister wants more free-to-air channels in the terrestrial television network

Saturday, September 10, 2005

In a press release on September 8 from the Swedish Ministry of Education, Research and Culture it was announced that new television broadcasting licenses for the Swedish digital terrestrial television network was to be given and that the Radio and Television Authority (RTVV) had been given the task to handle the applications. All digital television licenses will cease by the end of 2005 and the companies must apply for a renewal if they want to continue broadcasting in 2006 and 2007.

Minister Leif Pagrotsky says in the press release that he is “taking an initiative towards a broader offer and more free channels”. He doesn’t give any clue on how this will be done in the press release, however. In an interview in Dagens Media, his press secretary Thomas Johansson says that new applicants most likely must offer free-to-air channels if they want a licence. Johansson says that there is space for at least two more channels in the network.

The RTVV shall leave a suggestion of what channels will get new or continued licenses on November 21, 2005. As of September 8 TV4 AB, Dagens Industri, Sportexpressen and Eurosport SA had sent their applications for new or continued licenses.

Currently, very few of the 33 channels in the network have chosen to go free-to-air, in contrast to the United Kingdom, Germany and Finland where most channels are free-to-air.

US Senate blocks Alaska refuge drilling

Thursday, December 22, 2005

By a narrow vote late in the evening on December 21st, 2005 the US Senate blocked opening the nation’s oil reserve in National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska . This vote delivers a victory to environmentalists and denies the Bush administration their top energy priority. Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) attached the drilling plan to a measure to fund ongoing military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. However, the Senate late last night agreed to pass the defense bill, without the drilling provision.

Two key Republicans, Lincoln D Chafee (R-R.I.) and Mike DeWine (R-Ohio), joined Democrats in opposing the drilling. Senator Lieberman (D-Conn) said yesterday that Stevens was to blame for holding up money for the military. By including the drilling measure in the defense spending bill, it was hoped to twist the senators’ arms into voting for both provisions together in the scramble to finish the important business before the Senate’s Christmas break.

Replacing Negative Behaviors In Children With Habit Training

Submitted by: Connie Hammer

Parents often complain that they work on changing one irritating behavior only to find their child has replaced it with another annoying action. The easy solution to this problem is to choose the replacement behavior yourself and instill it as a habit.

All children have the ability to learn new ways of doing things and develop new habits or ways of relating. But when left to their own devices children, especially those on the Autism spectrum, will easily retire into their own little worlds and continue the patterns that have been wired into their brains. Therefore, establishing new behaviors of any type will take much encouragement and repetition over a span of time.

As the saying goes, even the most intelligent people typically have to do something twenty-one times before it becomes a habit. How much repetition and for how long depends on what it is you are trying to eliminate or change. Bad habits are harder to break because one has to struggle against the power of immediate reinforcement; such as, making my sister cry always gets me my mother’s attention.

Replacing old behaviors with new ones also takes lots of focused energy and effort. If you want to eliminate a negative behavior and substitute it with a more acceptable one, patience and consistency are a must. Most children will need to have the new behavior labeled, taught and role modeled, followed by many opportunities to practice. This may be difficult for busy parents to do but essential nonetheless if a change for the better is the goal.

Breaking an old habit is like blazing a new trail in a jungle – it may not be as easy as following the well-worn path but worth it if it avoids the quicksand. As children routinely perform the same action over and over again, their brain slowly gets rewired as the alternative pattern of behavior creates new neural pathways. Once established, these will override the old ones and become the default behavior.

Here are five easy steps to habit train your child:

1) Choose a value or a behavior you want to instill or modify. Prioritize them in order of annoyance and start at the top only working your way down when the one above has been mastered.

2) Provide appropriate substitutes for behaviors you want to change. If you want to stop a behavior you need to introduce an appropriate alternative to take it’s place and specifically train your child to use it.

3) Make it easy for your child to remember the new behavior. Train your child with prompts and reward the behavior you want to see more of. If you are trying to get your child to stop screaming post visual reminders for them to use their ‘inside voice’ all around the house and praise them immediately and specifically when she speaks appropriately.

4) Be intentional and consistent in your teaching. This means creating a plan of action, getting all household members on board with it and spending the time necessary to address the negative behavior you want to eliminate every time it surfaces.

5) Practice, practice, practice. Being extremely specific and concrete with your directives and using role-play as a tool will help children with Autism generalize from one situation to another. Giving children ample opportunities to practice new behaviors is extremely important and cannot be overdone if you want to achieve success.

Always remember that many negative, aggressive behaviors and tantrums in children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder often stem from an inability to communicate effectively. If you were a non-verbal child and unable to communicate your needs to get them met, wouldn’t you tend to tantrum too? Even a child with some language ability, who is trying his best to communicate but can’t get his point across, can easily become frustrated and discouraged.

In cases such as these, stopping negative behaviors may have more to do with improving communication than teaching substitute behaviors. Introducing alternative methods of communication and training them to use it can form new habits and ways of relating to people that result in more satisfaction and less frustration for all. An Augmentative or Alternative Communication (AAC) method or device may mean the difference between feeling invisible, isolated, and dependent versus being able to be seen/heard, interact and get their own needs met.

As parents we need to fully embrace our role as teacher or trainer and not shy away from it. Yes it is time consuming but consistently instructing and guiding our children is what gets the best results. If not, we are granting any and all behaviors permission to take hold. We all know that the deeper a root has established itself the harder it is to remove. So make your job easier and tackle those negative behaviors before they become too ingrained.
