Four killed in militant attack on Karachi military base

Sunday, May 22, 2011

At least four people have been killed in a militant attack on a Pakistani military base in Karachi. Explosions and gunfire were heard inside the base during the latest militant attack since U.S. forces killed Osama bin Laden in a raid on his compound in the country earlier this month.

Officials said as many as twenty militants may have attacked PNS Mehran in Karachi, the largest city in the country, and confirmed four had been injured and five wounded. Reports indicate Pakistani forces at the base are fighting back against the attackers; one military aircraft has been destroyed.

There are likely to be questions over how militants were able to infiltrate the base, even after warnings from the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan that there will be reprisal attacks for the killing of Osama bin Laden, the leader of al-Qaeda, in Pakistan this month. A spokesperson for the militant group said they would launch attacks on Pakistani military forces to avenge the terrorist leader.

Jermaine Pennant jailed for drink-driving

Tuesday, March 1, 2005

Aylesbury, England — The Arsenal F.C. midfielder Jermaine Pennant, currently on loan to Birmingham City, has today pleaded guilty to drink-driving, driving while disqualified, and driving without insurance by Aylesbury magistrates court. Pennant received a sentence of three months imprisonment. Pennant’s lawyer, Bary Warbutton, has said that the footballer will appeal against the severity of the sentence.

The incident occurred on January 23 of this year, Pennant was arrested after crashing teammate Ashley Cole’s car into a lamppost. The 22-year-old claimed that he crashed the car after attempting to operate the car’s Satellite navigation system.

Despite the claim by Warbutton that imprisonment “could completely destroy his career”, Birmingham City have said that they will stand by the player, and help to rehabilitate him. Arsenal released a statement saying that the sentence would not impact the player’s future with the club; his contract with club expires in the summer, at the same time as his loan-spell with Birmingham ends.

Wikinews interviews former Salt Lake City mayor and 2012 presidential candidate Rocky Anderson

Wednesday, December 21, 2011

Former Salt Lake City mayor and human rights activist Rocky Anderson took some time to discuss his 2012 U.S. presidential campaign and the newly-created Justice Party with Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn.

Anderson served as mayor of Salt Lake City for eight years (2000–2008) as a member of the Democratic Party. During his tenure, he enacted proposals to reduce the city’s carbon emissions, reformed its criminal justice system, and positioned it as a leading sanctuary for refugees. After leaving office, Anderson grew critical of the Democratic Party’s failure to push for impeachment against President George W. Bush, and for not reversing policies on torture, taxes, and defense spending. He left the party earlier this year and announced that he would form a Third party.

Anderson officially established the Justice Party last week during a press conference in Washington D.C.. He proclaimed “We the people are powerful enough to end the perverse government-to-the-highest-bidder system sustained by the two dominant parties…We are here today for the sake of justice — social justice, environmental justice and economic justice.” The party promotes campaign finance reform and is attempting to appeal to the Occupy Wall Street movement. It is currently working on ballot access efforts, and will hold a Founding Convention in February 2012 in Salt Lake City.

Among other issues, Anderson discussed climate change, health care, education, and civil liberties. He detailed his successes as mayor of Salt Lake City, stressed the importance of executive experience, and expressed his views on President Barack Obama and some of the Republican Party presidential candidates. He spoke in depth about former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, with whom he worked during the 2002 Winter Olympics, and fellow Utahan, former governor and U.S. ambassador to China Jon Huntsman, Jr..

Music And Your Dog

Music and Your Dog

by

Maria Elena

In an effort to learn more about the eco-friendly canine lifestyle, I ve been reading Green Dog, Good Dog by Dominique De Vito. The book has plenty of great tips for reducing your dog s carbon paw print, and one of the sections that particularly got my attention was the one about the benefits of leaving music on for your dog while you re not at home.

Radio for your dog?

I have always thought it was a good idea to leave the radio on for my dogs when I went to work, not only to soothe them but also to mask any outside noises that could frighten or excite them. Still, does leaving the radio on really help my dogs? Are they less stressed when music is present?

In Green Dog, Good Dog, a Dr. Gerald Buchoff shares his opinion and says that leaving the television or radio on for one s dogs is a wasteful activity and probably no more entertaining for them than looking out the window. If you re going to leave music on, however, the book recommends playing harp music which is especially soothing.

Heavy metal or more classical

I did some further research and found that there have been studies about the effect of music on canine behavior. Deborah Wells, an animal behaviorist from Queens University in Belfast, Ireland, and her team conducted a study at an animal shelter. After playing Vivaldi, Grieg, and other classical music to 50 dogs, the animals became calm and lied down.

On the other hand, when the researchers exposed the dogs to Metallica and other heavy metal songs, the dogs became agitated and started barking. Pop music and radio talk shows, meanwhile, barely had an effect.

In addition, a United Kingdom study published in the journal Animal Welfare found that shelter animals are significantly more relaxed when classical music is being played.

Teikyo University of Science s Department of Animal Science developed its own ultimate canine relaxation music formula, spending 18 months on the project. Researchers found that classical music, combined with specific ambience sounds such as human conversation, dog barking, and crow s crow, is the most effective sound for putting canines at ease.

Richard Hammond injured in jet-powered car crash

Wednesday, September 20, 2006

Richard Hammond, a British television presenter known for presenting shows such as Top Gear and Brainiac, is in a “stable” condition in hospital following a car accident during filming for Top Gear. He was injured when the jet-powered car he was driving crashed during filming for the former. The car, similar to the “Vampire” which holds the British land speed record, overturned whilst being driven at speeds of up to 300 miles per hour at Elvington airfield near York, in what was suggested to be an attempt at bettering the previous record. It has been suggested that he succeeded in a previous attempt. Emergency services were called to the scene at 5.45pm local time (16.45 UTC).

He was airlifted to the specialist neurological unit at Leeds General Infirmary. A former firefighter who was providing fire safety at the site and witnessed the accident said that Hammond was initially unconscious but able to speak when removed from the wreckage. At the time he indicated some pain in his lower back. Numerous eyewitnesses from the Top Gear crew claimed he was ‘helped into’ an air ambulance, suggesting he was conscious at the time. The ambulance service is reported to have said that Hammond was unconscious when they arrived at the scene, but began to regain consciousness upon arrival at the hospital.

The car was “very very badly damaged and in many pieces on the runway”, according to BBC News 24, reporting comments made by his colleagues.

A web sitehas been set up for well-wishers enabling them to donate to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. This site will accept donations until January 21, 2007. As of 23.09 (UTC) 21st September 2006 (day 2) £52,239.90 had been raised, surpassing the original target of £340.00 and well past their target of £51,000 (150 flights) that was set in the past few days.

Tips For Buying A New Hvac System

byadmin

An HVAC system is vital to the comfort of your home. These systems can last between ten and twenty years before needing to be replaced. By making this investment, although it may seem expensive, you will get your money’s worth over time. Here are a few things to consider before you take the plunge into finding a new HVAC system for your home.

Find an HVAC installer. This may seem obvious, but you may find an HVAC system that isn’t provided through a professional installer, which is never a good idea. Unless you are an HVAC expert yourself, never install the system yourself. To get the best results, always hire a professional.

Understanding prices. There are two prices when it comes to HVAC installation. There is the price of the unit and the price of installation. As stated above, you may find the right system outside of the professional, and this can save you money, but always be aware of prices as you get what you pay for. A professional is suggested for both the system and the installation process.

The size of the unit. You should find your HVAC unit through a professional, as the size of the system may not be the right one. There are many different sizes, and they can change depending on your home and your lifestyle. Talk to a professional about the sizing of a unit before you choose one. They will most likely ask you about your lifestyle and help you decide what size unit your home needs.

A new system provides efficiency. New HVAC systems can help to reduce your energy bills. Newer systems are more energy efficient than older systems, and you can really benefit from this. They can also help with dust control and keep allergens out of the air. You will notice a difference when your older system is changed out for a newer one.

Maintenance. So, what will the maintenance on your new system be? Most professionals suggest a yearly checkup for your system to make sure that all is well, and you are getting the most out of your system. Ask your HVAC professional about maintenance as many provide a type of maintenance contract that can help to benefit you in the long run.
