Charlottetown, P.E.I. residents rally to support restaurant

Wednesday, March 30, 2005

The owners of the Noodle House Restaurant of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.), Canada were overwhelmed by community support Tuesday when the restaurant overflowed with customers, cards, flowers, and personal pleas to not leave the province.

According to CBC News Prince Edward Island, the recent outpouring of support occurred after Tommy and Lina Ko, the restaurant owners, announced they would close the restaurant and leave the province following an incident two weeks ago, when groups of up to 200 teens from two nearby schools surrounded the restaurant, pelting it with snowballs, and threatening the Kos. Charlottetown Police Chief Paul Smith told CBC PEI that his force is ready to take whatever action is necessary to crack down on the behaviour and last week started videotaping over lunchtime when most of the misbehaviour has taken place. Police noted that they have received complaints from other businesses, pedestrians, and drivers in the busy “fast food alley” and intend to seek co-operation from the schools in identifying the main culprits.

However, a CBC PEI story from October, 2002, reported the Kos asking police to do more to stop the littering and other vandalism in the area including having signs smashed, windows broken, and fireworks set off in front of their restaurant. At that time, Deputy Chief Richard Collins told CBC PEI: “You can’t have upwards of 1,500 to 2,000 students in and around that area at dinner hour and not expect for some of them to misbehave,” but promised to continue patrols and try to teach the students respect of property.

Tommy Ko told CBC News that he was overwhelmed by the support this week and in thanks put on a surprise free buffet, though customers insisted on paying anyway. Nevertheless, after fighting the harassment for some five years, the Kos say they still are not sure they want to stay.

Cloned cattle’s milk and meat seem safe, according to new study

Tuesday, April 12, 2005

A National Academy of Sciences report (.pdf) last year said that while the milk and meat from cloned animals would not likely make anyone sick, more research should be performed. Now, a new US-Japan study published in the April 11 online issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences says that milk and meat from cloned cattle does indeed appear to meet industry standards and appears to be safe for human consumption.

As BBC News reports, the scientists, led by Professor Jerry Yang from the University of Connecticut, compared the produce from two beef and four dairy clones, all derived from a single Holstein dairy cow and a single Japanese black bull, with the produce from normal animals of similar age and breed.

The meat was analysed against more than 100 physiological, tissue and cellular components, while the milk was analysed for protein, fat and other variables. No significant differences between the produce of cloned and normal cattle were found. Higher levels of fat and fatty acids were found in the cloned cow meat, but they still fell within beef industry standards.

While the study showed the cloned produce to be within the range approved for human consumption, the scientists stressed that the research was still in its early stages. Their findings, they said, provide “guidelines” for further research with larger numbers of clones from different genetic backgrounds.

Cloning livestock may one day increase yields by copying those animals that are especially productive and especially resistant to disease.

“The milking production levels in the US are three to four times higher than levels in China; maybe even five times or more compared to cows in India and some other countries,” Professor Jerry Yang told BBC News. “Therefore cloning could offer technology for duplicating superior farm animals. However, all the products from these cloned animals must be safe for human consumption. …and it is a major issue for scientists to provide a scientific basis for the data and information to address this question.”

As USA Today reports, there is currently no law governing the sale of meat or milk from the estimated 1,000 to 2,000 cloned farm animals in the USA. But since 2003, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has asked producers to voluntarily keep the meat and milk of these animals, and that of their offspring, out of the food supply.

Wired News reports that companies like ViaGen and Cyagra, which offer livestock-cloning services, have also been waiting for several years for a final say from the FDA.

“For the United States agricultural industry, (cloning) can reduce the number of cows necessary for milking,” said Jerry Yang “They can have a pleasant environment and produce even more milk.” He also said that cloning cattle from the United States, where genetic breeding is more advanced, could save developing countries 50 years of breeding.

The idea of cloning animals for human consumption is not without its critics. First, there are the welfare concerns, as most cloned animals do not make it to term before being born, and many of those that do are born deformed or prone to illness. The Humane Society of the United States has asked for a ban on milk and meat from clones for just this reason. Second, there is still the concern that healthy clones may have subtle defects that could make their food products unsafe to eat.

As the Washington Post reports, some critics are asking why it is necessary to clone cows that produce huge amounts of milk when surpluses, rather than shortages, are the main problem facing the U.S. dairy industry today.

Q &Amp; A In Business Card Printing

Submitted by: Johnray Daniels

Some of us may be stuck with corporate business cards that some capitalist thought is appropriate to its image. But to those who have the liberty to create their own business card design, today s printing system allows for creation of custom business cards even for just a small amount of money. However, if you are new to the business card industry, you may have a lot of question in mind before you consider printing a business card. Here are some of the common questions in business card printing:

Question: What will business cards do to your business?

Answer: Aside from providing your contact information to your target customers, a business card helps reinforce your marketing message. It tells your prospects that if they want to know about you and your product offering, they should get in touch with you.

Question: Aside from the basic information such as the name, phone number, and address, what are the other elements that should be included in a business card?

Answer: You need to have a tagline and a logo. Your tagline will help explain what it is that you really do and what products or services that you offer. A simple tagline is enough. It has to be clear, concise and direct to the point. Be sure to put your logo as well as it will help promote brand awareness. Make sure that you have a compelling and well designed logo that effectively conveys the type of business that you are. It is also recommended t include your social media details such as Twitter and Facebook account, when applicable.

Question: How do you make your business card unique?

Answer: In today s highly competitive market, it is really important to stand out. You can consider combining striking designs with different card shape and size to make a card that truly stands out. You can also play with the graphics, use unique paper stock, and printing method. It is best to put a personal touch to the design of your card to make it more memorable.

Question: What kind of color printing should you use?

Answer: The common practice of many people is to use two color printing as it is more affordable. However, you can still go for four color or full color printing if you have the budget and you want a more dynamic design. Just be sure not to use too many colors to keep your card from looking too busy and confusing. Use only simple colors to ensure you create an engaging and professional business card.

Question: Is it recommended to use the back side of the card?

Answer: Many people use the back side of the card to print supplementary details and graphics. If you want to use the back of your card, be sure to leave enough space where people can write their notes.

Question: How many business cards should you print?

Answer: Look at your marketing need and target customers. In general, it is best to print few but effective business cards at first as information such as phone numbers and address can often change. It s best not to order a lot, but concentrate more on creating an impactful business card.

Question: The best tip to creating a business card?

Answer: Keep it simple, professional, and easy to read. When you want to use unconventional design, be sure to test it out first before printing it in bulk to ensure that you don t waste time and money.

Arson charge for man who cleaned home with gasoline

Wednesday, April 8, 2009

Ernest Krajniak from Chilton, Wisconsin in the United States has been charged with arson after a lit cigarette ignited gasoline soaked clothes, setting his apartment ablaze.

On Friday April 3, Krajniak, 47, cleaned his entire apartment with about five gallons of gasoline, wiping everything down with the soaked clothes. After he was finished, he piled the soaked clothes in the center of his bedroom, lit a cigarette and then threw what was left of the still lit cigarette, into the pile.

Krajniak never called the fire department and never pulled the alarm. Instead he yelled ‘fire’ a few times then walked to the police station where an ambulance took him to a local hospital for the treatment of minor burns. The fire department later arrived to put out the blaze and his apartment was extensively smoke damaged. 11 other apartments were also damaged, leaving the occupants without a place to stay for at least a week.

“I should have never used that,” said Krajniak during a court appearance on Monday. He admitted to knowing that gasoline was highly flammable. He was arrested and his bond has been set a US$2,500. Krajniak’s next court appearance is scheduled for Monday, April 13. According to WISinfo.com, Krajniak has no prior criminal record.

The careless smoking of cigarettes has been blamed for thousands of fires across the U.S. In January 2008, an unnamed elderly woman in Buffalo, New York was receiving oxygen for medical problems in her home and lit a cigarette and began to smoke it. The oxygen coming from her mask then facilitated the ignition of her clothing, setting her on fire.

In the U.S. in 2002, only 4% of all residential fires were reportedly caused by smoking materials. These fires, however, were responsible for 19% of residential fire fatalities and 9% of injuries. The fatality rate due to smoking is nearly four times higher than the overall residential fire rate; injuries are more than twice as likely. Forty percent of all smoking fires start in the bedroom or living room/family room; in 35% of these fires, bedding or upholstered furniture are the items first ignited.

China overtakes Germany as world’s biggest exporter

Sunday, January 10, 2010

Chinese officials have said that their country’s exports surged last December to edge out Germany as the world’s biggest exporter.

The official Xinhua news agency reported today that figures from the General Administration for Customs showed that exports jumped 17.7% in December from a year earlier. Over the whole of 2009 total Chinese exports reached US$1.2 trillion, above Germany’s forecast $1.17 trillion.

Huang Guohua, a statistics official with the customs administration, said the December exports rebound was an important turning point for China’s export sector. He commented that the jump was an indication that exporters have emerged from their downslide.

“We can say that China’s export enterprises have completely emerged from their all-time low in exports,” he said.

However, although China overtook Germany in exports, China’s total foreign trade — both exports and imports — fell 13.9% last year.

Motorcycle accident happens so fast that we are not able to control it. During an accident, we cannot do much, especially when we are injured. We cannot think of anything but the pain that we are suffering. It is essential for us to know the things that we have to do after the accident.

In situations wherein you are still able to talk, walk and move without difficulty, you might as well do the following steps. Get the name, address, phone number, drivers license number, and other significant information about the other driver involved in the accident. Also, get the names, address and phone numbers of the witnesses, if there is any. Ask if they can give some statement and record the conversation. Take note of important visual information, like scratches and marks on the car and the weather condition. If you do not have pen or any writing materials, review the scene in your mind so that you can remember it. You have to tell the police exactly what happened. Assist the police with the investigation, be cooperative. Take pictures of the cars involved in the accident in different angles.

Magnitude 5.8 earthquake in Virginia felt up and down U.S. east coast, Pentagon evacuated

Tuesday, August 23, 2011

A 5.8 earthquake struck 4 miles southwest of Mineral, Virginia, 80 miles south of Washington D.C., at 1:51 p.m. EDT (17:51 UTC) and lasted for 15–30 seconds. The quake had a magnitude of 5.8 with an epicenter 27 miles (43 km) east of Charlottesville, Virginia. A 2.8 aftershock was reported at 2:46 pm EDT (18:46 UTC).

According to Twitter reports, the quake was felt inland as far as Cleveland and Toronto and along the coast from Boston to Georgia. Police sergeant James Ryan, from South Brunswick, New Jersey stated that “The 911 line is flooding with calls right now. People want to know what happened. They want to know if there was an explosion.”

The United States Capitol and The Pentagon in Arlington were evacuated, as were police headquarters and city hall in New York City. Numerous minor injuries have been reported in Washington, D.C.; however, none of them are serious. There have been confirmed reports of damage at the Washington National Cathedral and the Smithsonian Castle. The Pentagon was also damaged when a burst pipe caused flooding. The North Anna Power Station lost offsite power and had to shut down, turning to four diesel generators to maintain cooling of the facility. Both the JFK and Newark airports were briefly shut down and the control towers were evacuated. A release from Amtrak stated that trains will be operating at reduced speed, but no damage has been found on any rail lines. The Washington Metro is also operating on reduced speed, with some stations closed down, while lines are evaluated.

In Boston, it was reported that the building at 111 Devonshire Street appeared to be leaning onto the adjacent building at 50 Milk Street, with fears that it could collapse. The street was blocked off while the Boston Fire Department investigated. However, it was determined that the buildings had always appeared like that. Nevertheless, the Boston Fire Department investigated the roof and the inside of 111 Devonshire St. After 30 minutes, the building was determined to be safe.

This is the second strongest earthquake to originate in Virginia since records have been kept, after the one recorded on May 31, 1897, near Giles County, which was estimated at a magnitude of 5.9.

The Dow initially dropped 50 points after the earthquake struck, but later increased over 100 points.

Teeth Whitening Startup: The Perfect Business Venture of 2021

If you are thinking of establishing your brand in the teeth whitening industry, what does the picture-perfect culture of social media tell you? Is it worth it to start a dental whitening business? Find your answers here.

1. The Need to Look Selfie-Ready!

A picture speaks a thousand words. And, when people are looking at picture after picture of beautiful people with striking smiles, they are inspired to look the same. Today’s Millennial and Gen-Z population values a perfect set of white teeth.

Previously, consumers focused on straightening crooked teeth, but with the advent of ultra-HD viewing devices and superior quality print media, the color of teeth has become a matter of utmost importance. According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, 99.7% of Americans believe a smile is an important social asset. Americans spent more than $1.4 billion on OTC teeth whitening products in 2017. Another survey disclosed that 80% of Americans in the 18-49 age group wanted whiter teeth.

Now that Americans are getting vaccinated, everyone is venturing out to enjoy a glorious summer. Whether it is the pressure of looking flawless for a weekend with friends or uploading that perfect Hot-Girl-Summer post on Instagram, a stunning and bright smile has become a necessity.

2. Excellent Teeth Whitening Results are More Tangible than Ever!

With the wide availability of teeth whitening products, ensuring a beautiful smile has become more accessible than ever. If you consider other cosmetic and beauty products, results are not always per the consumer’s expectations, but teeth whitening products are more effective and safer than before.

FDA-approved, ISO-certified teeth whitening products are easy to obtain, and diverse options are available all over the web. For example, if one wants to whiten teeth without peroxide-based gels, they can find non-peroxide teeth whitening kits. If someone does not have the time for comprehensive teeth whitening sessions, they can choose teeth whitening pens or dental whitening strips from their trusted seller.

3. Numbers support the Growing Trend of Whiter Teeth

In addition to the social media trend of perfect white teeth and easy access to premium dental whitening products, there is one additional reason to convince you: Significantly stronger growth forecasts of the global teeth whitening industry.

In the year 2020, the global teeth whitening market stood at $6,140.75 million. According to industry estimates, the number will reach $8,207.2 million in 2026, with an expected CAGR of 4.95% over the same period. Rising oral hygiene awareness, growing spending capacity of Millennials/Gen-Z population, and easy access to OTC products are a few reasons behind the exceptional growth.

If you look at the numbers, it is clear that the rising trend of the industry makes it a lucrative startup option. And, with the increase in educational facilities and growing awareness of teeth whitening products in developing and under-developed nations, you can grow your business in largely untapped markets and establish your brand.

How to Start a Teeth Whitening Business?

Cosmetic dentistry is a booming billion-dollar industry with incredible growth potential. If you want to start your own teeth whitening business, now is the right time.

1. Choose your Business Model after Thorough Consideration

Choosing your business model is the first step in establishing your brand. If you are a dentist or a dental hygienist, you can think of including teeth whitening treatments in your list of services. To save on overheads and ensure limited investment, consider mobile teeth whitening services or sell dental whitening solutions through your website/social media profile. Consider your budget, preferences, and business goals to choose between different startup ideas for your teeth whitening business.

2. Determine your USP and Create Marketing Strategies

Learn more about your competitors. What are their product offerings? What are their pricing strategies? What kind of treatments do they provide to their customers? With in-depth research of the key industry players, you can determine your USP (Unique Selling Proposition). A clear USP will convince potential customers and enable you to build robust marketing strategies for your dental whitening business.

3. Take Supply Chain Collaboration to the Next Level

Gone are the days when the responsibility of manufacturers ended with the delivery of premium-quality teeth whitening products. Today, supply chain collaborations are much more than inventory management and warehousing facilities. Modern manufacturers provide in-depth analysis of business trends, help with legal compliance, support low MOQs on private label products, offer product fulfillment options and marketing support to help your business grow. Hence, it is wise to partner with a reputed teeth whitening manufacturer to grow your brand.

4. Choose Inventory and Start your Cosmetic Dentistry Business

When working with an experienced manufacturer, they will help you to select fast-moving inventory products. It is your job to research as well. Find out more about the seasonal demand for teeth whitening products and identify the current trends. For example, there is a growing demand for sustainable, eco-friendly toothpaste whitening tablets in the market. You can include the innovative product offering in your inventory to sell more.

When starting your teeth whitening business, focus on building your brand. With authentic marketing strategies and premium teeth whitening solutions, you will be able to carve a niche in the market.

All the Best!
