David S. Touretzky discusses Scientology, Anonymous and Tom Cruise

Wednesday, February 6, 2008

David S. Touretzky, prominent free speech activist and critic of Scientology, discussed his opinions on the recent Internet backlash against the Church of Scientology in an interview with former Scientologist and Wikinews reporter Nicholas Turnbull. The recent conflict on the Internet between critics of Scientology and the Church has been spurred on in declarations by a nebulous Internet entity using the name Anonymous that the Church of Scientology “will be destroyed”. Anonymous has directed recent protests at Scientology centres across the world, which have attracted significant numbers of individuals supporting the cause. In recent e-mail correspondence with Wikinews, a representative of the Church of Scientology declared that the Church considers the activities of Anonymous to be illegal, and that Anonymous “will be handled and stopped”.

Touretzky, a research professor in artificial intelligence and computational neuroscience at Carnegie Mellon University, has been a prominent critic of the Church of Scientology since mid-1995, and has been protesting against Scientology vociferously since then; he has also run websites that publish material that Scientology wishes to keep suppressed from the public eye, such as extracts from Scientology’s formerly-confidential Operating Thetan (OT) materials. Touretzky views the actions of the Church of Scientology as being “a threat to free speech”, and has endured harassment by the Church of Scientology for his activities.

The Church of Scientology continues to suffer damage to its public reputation through increased exposure on the Internet and vocal protests by Scientology critics such as Prof. Touretzky. A recent event that focused intense attention on Scientology’s totalitarian attitude was the leak of an internal Church of Scientology propaganda video to the Internet video sharing site YouTube, in which celebrity Scientologist Tom Cruise spoke heavily in Scientology’s jargon and stated that that “we [Scientology] are the authorities” on resolving the difficulties of humanity. The declaration of war by Anonymous followed shortly after this leak, in the form of a video posted to the Internet.

The ongoing dispute, cast by some as Scientology versus the Internet, brought Scientology terms such as “SP” (Suppressive Person, an enemy of Scientology) and “KSW” (Keeping Scientology Working) into general usage by non-Scientologists from the late 1990s onwards; increased attention has been drawn to Scientology by the release of the Cruise video in addition to media coverage. This focus has caused an even greater propagation of these terms across the outside world, as Touretzky comments in the interview.

Wikinews asked Prof. Touretzky about the impact that the activities of Anonymous will have on Scientology, the public relations effect of the Tom Cruise video, the recent departure of individuals from the Church of Scientology’s executive management, the strategies that Anonymous will employ and Touretzky’s experiences of picketing the Church.

Method To Winning At Scratch Off Tickets Revealed!

By Chris Malcolm

Many people buy thousands and thousands of dollars worth of scratch off tickets a year. Out of all the money someone spends on a scratch-off ticket, how often do they win? Well a great method to winning at scratch off tickets is to definitely stay as far as you can away from $1.00 tickets. These scratchers give you just about the worst possible odds of winning. You have a 1 in 9 chance of winning each time! Who in their right mind would want to risk $9.00 for a chance to win $1.00. Not me of course, but there are many people that play $1.00 tickets like they are going out of style.

If you want to become a consistent scratch-off winner you need to play AT LEAST $2.00 tickets. Upgrading to a $2.00 ticket will increase your odds of 1 in 9 to 1 in 3. Most $2.00 tickets you buy will give you a 1:3 chance of winning each and every time. This is one of the single most important method to winning at scratch off tickets. Most people just by scratch offs without reading the odds on the back. The odds are there for you to see!

Most people also buy scratch offs without taking a look at their states lottery website. If you go to (YourStatesInitals) lottery dot com you will be able to see exactly which scratch offs have won the top prize already. Why would you want to buy scratch offs where the top prize has already been won? It happens everyday! Millions of dollars are bought each year on scratch offs where the top prize is completely gone and has already been won! Go to your states website and take a look to make sure you ONLY buy tickets where the top prize has not been won.

Now when buying scratch-off tickets, many people make the mistake of buying ENTIRE scratch-off rolls. This is a HUGE MISTAKE. Each scratch off roll costs $300.00. On average you will win HALF your money back if you are lucky. Many hardcore scratch-off players buy hundreds of scratch off rolls a year and on average only win half their money back if they are lucky. This is definitely not the best scratch off strategy. If you are going to buy scratch off rolls you might as well not play the scratch off lottery at all.

I have been playing scratch off tickets for over 20 years and have been working in a convenience store. I have seen all sorts of scratch off winners and LOSERS. I have seen people lose over $1000 in an hour! I have also seen someone win $500,000. It is all possible with scratch off tickets. Developing the right method to winning scratch off tickets is extremely important and if you find the right strategy you will start investing your money in scratchers instead of wasting your money. If you do not have a strategy you are just pouring your money away into the governments hands. I wish you the best of luck down your path to scratch off success!

Stolen laptop found; had over 98,000 students’ personal data

Sunday, September 18, 2005

San Francisco police have recovered a laptop stolen on March 11 from the University of California, Berkeley. The laptop was left unattended in the Graduate Division and contained personal information on 98,369 graduate students and applicants going as far back as 1976. This information included names, birth dates, addresses, and Social Security numbers.

The Silicon Valley forensic lab which analyzed the laptop said it had been reformatted, making it very difficult to determine if the data had been accessed. “There’s nothing in the Police Department investigation that points to any type of identity theft or credit card theft” said university spokeswoman Janet Gilmore.

The laptop was stolen by an unknown woman, who sold it to Shuki Alburati, who sold the laptop to an unsuspecting South Carolina man. Shuki Alburati was arrested on June 8 for receiving stolen property; he has been charged with one misdemeanor count.

He claims he didn’t know the laptop, a new IBM X40 worth $2,429, was stolen. He purchased the laptop from the woman, who said it wasn’t stolen, for $300 or $340. A few days later, on April 19, he placed the laptop on eBay. The winning bidder was a man in South Carolina who bought the laptop for $1,195.50. Police have said this man is not a suspect. Police were alerted by IBM after the man called IBM for tech support.

Shuki Alburati has pleaded not guilty. He claimed “It’s unfair, I didn’t know it was stolen.” His trial is scheduled for Sept. 30 before Superior Court Judge Michael Gaffey in Oakland. The woman who stole the laptop has not yet been found.

Saturday, March 14, 2015

This weekend saw the opening of two new exhibitions at Edinburgh’s National Gallery of Modern Art. Wikinews attended Thursday’s press preview for the event where a full contingent of the capital’s press turned out to see the striking collection of paintings, photographs, and other works. Presented below are a selection of images captured at the preview.

REFLECTIONS: A Series of Changing Displays of Contemporary Art, billed as a showcase of a “diverse range of internationally-renowned contemporary and modern artists” is to display major works from the Gallery’s permanent collection, alongside important loans. Alongside this broad range of works, a three-room display of pieces on-loan from the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation — with a dramatic painted steel relief, ‘borrowed’ from the Tate in London — runs from March 14 through to January 10 next year.

Admission to both exhibitions is free; being located in Dean, to the north-west of Edinburgh’s city centre, a free Gallery bus service is available.

dollar store merchandise

by

BretSykess

My sister and I took her three grandchildren shopping for an afternoon. Their mother had a dentist appointment and the common care supplier was not capable of take them. It was a wet day so we thought the mall could be an excellent place to spend some time. One of the first stores we noticed was a greenback store. The kids have been excited as a result of they each had money to purchase a treat.

The dollar store merchandise did not look very appealing to me. When we first walked in I used to be impressed with the shows and the quantity of greenback store merchandise, however upon nearer examination you might inform how poorly made the objects were. My sister granddaughter was taking a look at hair accessories. They were shiny colours and so had instantly caught her attention. She was deciding which color she wanted. The boys had been taking a look at bags of plastic soldiers. I discussed to my sister that the objects appeared of poor quality. She laughed and identified that I was speaking about greenback store merchandise, it was supposed to be cheap. The kids had so many issues to select from that they could not resolve what greenback retailer merchandise to purchase. We had been within the store for thirty minutes earlier than we had been lastly capable of take the dollar store merchandise up to the checkout counter. As we were standing in line I noticed that there have been packs of gum within the model I like. They had been six packs packaged together. This appeared like an excellent deal for a dollar so I picked one up. My sister picked up a couple baggage of sweet for the children to have in the car. We had spent so much time choosing out greenback retailer merchandise that we only had a few minutes before lunch time. I offered to take the packages to the automobile in order that they’d not get lost. I was virtually to the door of the mall when I heard one of the boys calling my name. He came operating as much as me to ensure that I would bear in mind to lock the car doorways so nobody would steal the dollar retailer merchandise I used to be storing there. I reassured him that his purchases would be safe. Earlier than I went back in the mall I opened one of the packs of gum I had bought. It was so previous and laborious that I might hardly chew it. I informed my sister that my dollar retailer merchandise was not definitely worth the price I paid for it. We took the kids to lunch then dropped them off at their home. My sister tried the sweet that she had purchased and located that it was outdated and very poor quality. When she was complaining about this I reminded her about what she had advised me, it was greenback retailer merchandise it was speculated to be cheap. I don’t think that either of us will be spending one other afternoon procuring in a dollar store. Come with me: Buying A Wood Garage Doors Carpet Steam Cleaning Patio Sliding Glass Doors

US Treasury Secretary: “We need the ability to seize firms”

Wednesday, March 25, 2009

Treasury Department secretary Timothy Geithner and the Obama administration are pressuring Congress to allow the government to seize troubled financial institutions such as insurance companies and investment firms. Currently, banks are the only such entities that the government has authority to take over.

Speaking before the House Financial Services Committee, Geithner said “The United States government does not have the legal means today to manage the orderly restructuring of a large, complex non-bank financial institution that poses a threat to the stability of our financial system.”

Committee Chairman Barney Frank (D-MA) agreed, saying, “When non-bank major financial institutions need to be put out of their misery, we need to give somebody the authority to do what the FDIC can do with banks.”

Geithner would work with the White House and Federal Reserve to execute any such takeovers.

The expanded powers would have allowed the seizure of companies such as pariah AIG, which has already received US$180 billion in government aid. The recent controversy over the payment of bonuses has bumped up the plan to high priority. It was initially to have been part of a more comprehensive overhaul by the government of the financial regulatory system.

Not all are happy with the proposal. Republican House minority leader John Boehner derided the plan, saying it would be “an unprecedented grab of power.”

Maxine Waters (D-CA) criticised the government for its lack of transparency in dealing with the current crisis, and questioned Geithner on whether firms such as Goldman Sachs had received preferential treatment by the government. Such probing may indicate reluctance on the part of Congress to grant the expanded powers.

Other than simply taking over a firm, the government would also be able to purchase its assets, guarantee losses, and take out a partial ownership interest.

“It is a terrible, tragic thing that this country came into this crisis with such limited tools for trying to protect the economy itself from the kind of distress that would come as the system came back down to Earth,” Geithner summarized.

Customer Relationship

Customer relationships is the only thing that cannot be replicated by a competitor.

Sensex is high, Gold is costly and properties are not affordable. So invest in customer relationship. It is the only investment where you get guaranteed return.

Good customer relations boost sales, as it is easy for customers to repeat-buy during their lifetime. Excellent CRM systems can predict customer preferences and prompt customers with tempting offers when they are ready to buy.

Good CRM systems identify potential customers who are about to leave, pre-empt them and trigger win-back programmes. Customer service creates brand loyalty.

Boost profits

Marketing to existing customers and referred customers costs a lot less than marketing to new customers. It is ten times more profitable selling to existing customers. It is important to retain old customer than acquiring new ones. Retaining happy customers boosts profits.

Database asset

CRM creates quality database which is a real asset to a company. Some companies quantify the value of their database by calculating lifetime values of different customer profiles.

Resources required for maintaining customer relationship

CRM fails without the support of senior management and all stake holders. CRM implementation is, expensive and time-consuming and requires extra resources, training and motivation programmes.

It is a long term investment and reduces regular advertisement cost. Every stake holders have to join hands to satisfy customer.

Companies who do not appreciate the importance of an effective complaint handling system risk internal friction. This may lead to a vicious circle, as internal friction generates poor motivation, staff disloyalty and bad service. This is why customer loyalty and staff loyalty are closely linked.

Effectively, marketers need to take control of CRM to ensure a cohesive, integrated system adopted by all departments. Companies commit suicide by:

1. Ignoring customer e-mails.

2. Failing to get to know customers.

3. Failing to satisfy customers.

Why CRM fails

Organizations have steadily got worse at CRM because of the lack of a customer-driven culture (failed leadership), poor CRM project management skills and constant cost cutting.

CRM success

The CRM presents a golden opportunity to create competitive advantage by developing a system that creates value or adds value to customers experience. It brings them closer to the organization, listens to them, help data collection and serves their needs better than before. This grows sales from repeat sales.

The CRM philosophy

A real CRM philosophy views customers at the centre of the universe. This customer focus requires a longer-term, strategic view of the business as opposed to a short-term transactional marketing approach that focuses on quarterly sales results.

Cruise ship sinks off Greek coast, two missing

Thursday, April 5, 2007

An evacuation operation was carried out today as a cruise ship ran aground off the coast of Santorini, a Greek island, leaving up to 1,167 passengers and 391 crew to abandon the ship.

The Sea Diamond took on water and listed twelve degrees after running aground, but had been stabilized. Fifteen hours after the grounding, the ship sank.

Cruise operator Louis Cruise Lines had announced earlier that all passengers and crew were accounted for. Officials are now reporting that two passengers are missing. A 45-year-old man, Jean-Christophe Allain, and his 16-year-old daughter, Maud, were reported missing by family members also on the cruise, according to a merchant marine ministry official.

BBC journalist Malcolm Brabant reported that the missing passengers had been in a lower-deck cabin when the ship ran aground. Allain’s wife and son escaped safely to the upper decks.

Most of the passengers on board the Sea Diamond ship are either American or German. Local news reported that the ship is taking on water after striking a reef in the volcanic island’s lagoon, similar to a lake, and issued a distress signal, launching an operation that led more than a dozen ships and five Greek Navy helicopters to evacuate all the people on board, with many boarding a small ferry.

The ship was about one nautical mile – 1.8km – from the island’s coast when it ran aground. The ship’s operators, Louis Cruise Lines, earlier said that a “controlled evacuation” was underway, but that “there is no danger to passengers”. The ship had left the Athenian port of Piraeus on Monday for a five-day tour of the islands. The sea was calm when the incident occurred.

“Some passengers have already reached the island and no-one has been hurt,” an official at the Santorini coastguard has said, whilst Merchant Marine Minister Manolis Kefaloyiannis said to reporters, “Thankfully, everything has gone well so far. Emergency services responded very quickly and very well.”
