On Saturday the customs officials of the Air Intelligence Unit at Chennai International Airport in India seized 24 kilograms of gold from two South Korean women. The gold was worth worth 80 million Indian rupees, the officials said. This reportedly was the first instance wherein two South Korean women have been found involved in smuggling gold into India.
The customs officials questioned the women at the exit of the arrival hall and found their replies evasive. As a result they searched them and found one kilogram pure gold bars in front and back pockets in their mini shorts under their skirts and pajamas. Each was carrying twelve bars. The officials seized the gold under the Customs Act 1962. The officials identified the women as Hanbyoul Jung and Eunyoung Kim, both 26 years old. The women were detained by the officials for further interrogation.
Customs officials had previously got information suggesting passengers would be smuggling the huge quantity of gold from Hong Kong into India. According to the officials, the two women arrived from Hong Kong on the flight number CX 631 provided by Cathay Pacific airlines.
