FBI details chief justice’s prescription drug trouble

Friday, January 5, 2007

Former U.S. Chief Justice William Rehnquist suffered paranoid delusions in 1981 during withdrawal from a dependence on prescription painkillers, according to his recently-released FBI file.

The late head of the U.S.’s top court began taking the drug Placidyl in the early 1970s for insomnia and back pain while he was an associate Supreme Court justice. His dependence on the drug was first made public when he was hospitalized for symptoms related to it in 1981, but the delusions were only revealed in the release of the file this week.

A doctor who treated Rehnquist told an FBI investigator the justice had “bizarre ideas and outrageous thoughts. He imagined, for example, that there was a CIA plot against him.” Another doctor said Rehnquist “had also gone to the lobby in his pajamas in order to try to escape.”

Rehnquist had been taking nearly three times the recommended maximum daily dosage of the drug. His delusions came when doctors at George Washington University Hospital took him off it. Eventually, they put him back on Placidyl and weaned him off slowly until he was cured of his dependence.

The FBI conducted an extensive investigation into Rehnquist’s drug dependence at the request of the Senate Judiciary Committee during his 1986 confirmation hearings to become chief justice.

Rehnquist’s file was released to media and lawyers this week as part of a public records request. Rehnquist died in September 2005 and because his privacy could no longer be violated, the FBI OK’d its release.

The FBI was also asked to investigate Democrats who were set to testify against Rehnquist at the 1986 hearing, the file showed. The Democrats were set to testify Rehnquist intimidated minority voters in the early 1960s as a Republican Party official in Arizona.

It’s not clear if the bureau ever did investigate the Democrats, however a memo in the file shows then-Assistant Attorney General John Bolton, the most-recent United Nations Ambassador for the U.S., approved the investigation and said he would “accept responsibility should concerns be raised about the role of the FBI.”

Rehnquist first took his seat as associate justice in 1972 and served on the court until his death.

My Top Housecleaning Tip}

Submitted by: Frederick Grear

This last Mother’s Day, my husband paid for a couple of months worth of a house cleaning maid service as my gift. And let me tell you, that house cleaning service was seriously one of the best gifts I have ever received! I thoroughly enjoyed having a maid service do all of my house cleaning for me for a couple of months. I enjoyed the maid service so much, in fact, that at the end of the time period my husband had paid for, I talked him into hiring the maid service on permanently. Now that I have experienced house cleaning services, I would never go back to doing my own house cleaning ever!

My maid service does a variety of house cleaning services around the house for me. For me, my least favorite part of house cleaning is definitely cleaning the bathroom. Let’s face it, bathrooms are just gross! Every house has a disgusting bathroom that is in dire need of a good, deep clean. My maid service comes in once a week and gives every bathroom in my house such a good, clean, scrub down that I could practically eat breakfast off the floor if I wanted to! Now that is house cleaning.

The kitchen is another spot in my house that I enjoy leaving to the house cleaning service. When my maid leaves at the end of a good house cleaning day, my kitchen counter tops gleam and I can almost see my face reflecting in my spotless, shiny sink. And the kitchen floor is always one hundred percent spot free when my maid service is finished with the house cleaning.

Other hard to clean spots in my house that I have enjoyed leaving to the maid service and their wonderful house cleaning expertise is the carpets in my kids bedrooms. I don’t know how those kids get those carpets so messy, especially seeing that the only place in the house that is allowed food is the kitchen. (this rule was set in place in an attempt to keep the rest of the house clean) But low and behold, every single week, I go into the kids rooms to find spots of who knows what all over the floor. Those carpets would seriously be my house cleaning nightmare! Thank goodness for my maid service! Every week, without fail, somehow those marvelous house cleaning experts manage to get every single spot out of the carpets. It is truly amazing.

I seriously enjoyed those couple of months with my maid service and the house cleaning business they worked with so much, that I could not bare to see them leave when my gift expired! I am so glad I have a wonderful husband who was kind enough to pay my molly maid maid service to stay on and do some permanent house cleaning for me and my family. Now I am free to spend more time with my family! Do you want to know my best house cleaning tips? Get yourself a maid service and hire a house cleaning business.

Manitoba volunteers go to war against Red River flooding

Monday, April 6, 2009

Over 1,600 volunteers registered to help build approximately 65,000 of the 500,000 sandbags to create dikes 20.5 feet (6.2 meters) high to protect the City of Winnipeg, Manitoba in the war against the Red River of the North flood.

700 volunteers answered at the rural municipality of St. Andrews alone. Once sandbags are filled for West St. Paul, St. Andrews, and Selkirk, then frozen culverts must be cleared.

The height of the river is expected to be Thursday, and predictions are that it will be less than Flood of the Century of 1997. There is no precipitation in the forecast, and snow in the province should be melted by the end of the week.

“The fear right now is we have to get that ice out of the river. The Amphibex [Excavators] are still working and breaking the ice apart, and everyday we buy with the warm weather and the current, it is thinning the ice down a bit, so when it does start to move, the better chance it’ll move right out into the lake,” said Paul Guyder, the emergency coordinator for the RMs of St. Andrews and St. Clements.

“I feel that we’ve done everything humanly possible to get ready,” said Gary Doer, Premier of Manitoba, “But … there are fallibilities with human behaviour. We can take every preventative measure as human beings possible and we can still get Mother Nature proving again she is superior.”

Communities with ring diking will partially or fully close their dikes at the beginning of the week. Provincial officials are considering opening the Red River Floodway gates around mid-week before ice is fully melted.

Ice jams could cause flooding within the city, however opening the gates could spare neighbourhood flooding when the river rises to the estimated 6.3 meters (20.7 feet) height. The province does have back up plans for dealing with ice jams within the city if they do occur. The unpredictability of ice jams and the ensuing water level rise may cause neighbourhood flooding. The city is raising dikes where the river has jammed with ice in the past such as on tight curves and past bridges. Likewise there are excavators and backhoes positioned at these points.

Vulnerable neighbourhoods on the river banks have been reinforced with sandbag dikes at vulnerable areas from the massive volunteer effort over the weekend. Guyader feels no more extra volunteers are needed, however volunteers are still being asked to leave their names and number in case of unpredicted need. Existing personnel will assess roads, and help with clean up.

Approximately 400 of the 800 people who evacuated the Roseau River Anishinabe First Nation have returned to their homes.

Former Premier, Dufferin Roblin, brought forward the floodway as a protection for Winnipeg residents and economy following the 1950 Red River Flood. The Red River floodway, “Duff’s Ditch” was finally finished in 1968, and its floodway gates have been opened 20 times saving Winnipeg from an estimated CA$10 billion in damages. The floodway expansion began in 2005 at a price of $665 million.

Polish and Chinese experts have come to survey the Red River Floodway, and Dennis Walaker, mayor of Fargo, North Dakota recognises the need for Red River flood defences down river. “Every town that you drive by from the Canadian line up to Winnipeg is either elevated or ring-diked,” said Walaker.

Concern about sovereign debt of some EU members roils markets

Friday, February 5, 2010

Global stock markets fell steeply on Thursday on investor concerns about the growing sovereign debts of European Union member states Greece, Portugal, and Spain. A report of a rise in weekly jobless claims in the United States contributed to the market gloom. The MSCI World index fell the most in over nine months. Currency and commodities markets also posted major moves.

If other European countries are having trouble like Greece, then it’s a big problem for banks, and the banks are the foundation for everything.

The euro fell more than one percent against the US dollar to an eight-month low; against the yen it fell 2.2%, approaching a one-year low. The price of crude oil fell 5% to US$73.14 per barrel and gold slid 4.4% to US$1,063 per ounce.

Greece’s Prime Minister, George Papandreou, announced an austerity program, but that is now threatened by plans by the largest trade union for a national strike. In 2009, Greece’s budget deficit was 12.7% of the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP). Papandreou’s plan called for that to drop to 3% by 2012.

Gary Jenkins of Evolution Securities told the Financial Times, “[t]he risk aversion trade is back on as the debt problems of Europe are for the first time bringing down global markets. Corporate earnings may come in strongly [in the US], but investors are more concerned about the possible default of a sovereign European nation.”

“This is a sovereign problem, and it’s hitting everything,” said Keith Springer of Capital Financial Advisory Services to Reuters. “If other European countries are having trouble like Greece, then it’s a big problem for banks, and the banks are the foundation for everything. European banks will be in trouble and that will carry over to all stocks.”

“The focus is shifting toward Spain and Portugal, where the deficit-reduction plans have been far less ambitious than Greece,” said Kornelius Purps of UniCredit Markets & Investment Banking to Bloomberg.

Concerns in Portugal centered on political tension surrounding a regional spending bill. In Spain, the source of worry was reportedly because the government backed down from promised pension reform.

European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet sought to ease investor fears, in part by noting that the deficit in the US is expected to hit 10% of GDP in 2010, compared with about 6% in the eurozone. He said that he was “confident” that Greece is moving in the right direction.

Trichet did admit that it is of “paramount importance” for Greece, Portugal and Spain to get their public finances under control.

GAO reveals $1.6 billion spent on public relations by the Bush administration in 2003-2005

Tuesday, February 14, 2006

A new 154-page Government Accountability Office (GAO) report says seven federal departments together spent US$1.6 billion on 343 contracts with public relations firms, advertising agencies, and media organizations, as well as individuals involved in such activities.

Congressional Democrats requested the report after several incidents surfaced in which journalists or commentators were paid to promote the Bush administrations programs, but did not disclose the financing, so called payola. In one case, Armstrong Williams was paid $186,000 for promotions of President Bush’s No Child Left Behind law. The administrations position was that an agencies’ mission includes spreading information about federal programs.

At that time, the GAO had independent objections to the ready-to-air news stories the administration’s provided to TV stations in order to promote it policies. The administration claimed the burden of disclosure falls to the TV stations.

Congress has now inserted a provision into an annual spending bill requiring federal agencies to include “a clear notification” within the text or audio of a prepackaged news story that it was prepared or paid for by the government.

Rep. Henry A. Waxman (D-Calif.) said “Careful oversight of this spending is essential given the track record of the Bush administration, which has used taxpayer dollars to fund covert propaganda within the United States.”

The seven agencies covered by the report are Commerce, Defense, Health and Human Services, Homeland Security, Interior, Treasury, and Veterans Affairs.

What Are The Leading Blood Borne Pathogens And How Are They Spread

By Greg Garner

Blood borne pathogens are tiny microorganisms that are found in the blood of humans. If exposed to this blood, other humans can become infected. Some of the worse and most common blood borne pathogens includes the following among others.

Hepatitis B

Approximately one third of the world’s population is infected with Hepatitis B. The most common way to contract Hepatitis B is through direct contact with an infected person’s blood, followed by sexual contact. The disease attacks the liver and presents itself in infected persons though general ill health such as nausea, loss of appetite, vomiting, dehydration, body aches, fever, itchy skin, a darkening of the urine and jaundice, or yellowing of the skin and eyes. A scarring of the liver occurs called cirrhosis. People with Hepatitis B are likely to develop cancer of the liver.

Hepatitis C

Hepatitis C is an infection of the liver, which leads to shut down, or liver cancer. This type of Hepatitis is asymptomatic and can go undiagnosed and untreated for years, all the while causing damage. Sexual contact used to be considered the primary cause of transmission but recent studies have disproved this making contaminated blood contact the primary threat. This usually occurs via accidental needle pricks and blood spatter to the eyes, mouth, or open wound. Until the early 90’s, blood transfusions spread the disease.

HIV

HIV affects the immune system and almost always leads to the AIDS virus. With the bodies immune system unable to fend off attacks, opportunistic infects of all sorts affect the person who has AIDS and even a common cold can be lethal, depending on the stage of the HIV disease. Blood transfusions, childbirth, needle sharing, and accidental needle pricks are the four leading ways to contract HIV.

Blood born pathogens

Blood born pathogens are killers. Until 1990, there were over 200 deaths and 9,000 cases of infection every year that could be directly contributed to improper handling of infected blood and materials in the United States alone. There is a massive training program to curb the number of workplace accidental blood borne pathogen exposure incidents. However, it still remains one of the most overwhelming medical expenses worldwide. The accidental contraction of Hepatitis C from an infected syringe is the number one cause for liver transplants. A liver transplant alone costs over one million dollars when you factor in doctors, hospitals, and lifelong medications. Blood born pathogens kill countless millions and are still a very real global threat.

Best Defense

The most important weapon anyone can have against becoming infected with blood borne pathogens is knowledge. Being aware of how blood borne pathogens are spread, not only in the workplace but in everyday life is a vital step in self protection. Everyone should learn what steps to take when placed in a dangerous situation where chance of infection could occur. The first rule is never to expose your self to blood. If you must handle anything that has blood on it, wear protective gloves and clothing. There are many training websites that can help a person learn the universal protection techniques involved in preventing the spread of blood borne pathogens. This training is usually free of charge, with the only charge being if you want the certification that you have passed the tests that are included with the training.

Observing the 2012 Human Trafficking Awareness Day in the US, and wider world

Friday, January 13, 2012

This week US citizens observed National Human Trafficking Awareness Day through acts of education, legislation, and enforcement; whilst, around the world, other people highlighted or tackled this global problem in their own countries.

According to an annual report on human trafficking released by the US State Department in June last year, 27 million men, women and children are exploited through human trafficking. Worldwide, at least two million children are estimated to be trafficked victims of the sex trade; and, in military conflicts, it is not uncommon for children to be forced to bear arms. In releasing the report last year, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton highlighted the importance of international cooperation in addressing trafficking, and cultural issues associated with it.

Under the United Nations’ Palermo Protocols, human trafficking encompasses cases where victims are born into slavery, forcibly transported for exploitation, consented to work with a trafficker, and/or were forced to participate in criminal activities. The Protocols also recognize the unique status and rights of children.

Reports from across the United States show a number of communities taking local action to solve, or otherwise highlight, this global problem.

In Southern California, Sister Caritas Foster is an advocate for the area’s victims of human trafficking. Commenting on the area’s involvement, she stated: “We in the San Francisco Bay Area are one of the largest receiving areas with our borders and coasts”. For over four years, Foster has worked on educating the public on human trafficking, speaking to civic and religious groups and describing the power traffickers hold over their victims through vivid accounts of situations trafficked individuals find themselves in. Many have no idea where they are located, suffer under the constant threat of deportation, and most often lack the language abilities to seek help.

Los Angeles politician Don Knabe said human trafficking was not a distant problem but one that hits close to home. As the county supervisor overseeing the fourth district in Los Angeles County, Knabe cited figures from the Probation Department showing 84 percent of arrests of children on prostitution charges in 2010 were in his district; he believes the overall problem for the county is much larger, and wants the Probation Department to establish a special unit dedicated to sexually exploited minors.

Northward in Seattle, Washington, members of the King County Sheriff’s department realized that law enforcement had to deal supportively with the symptoms of human trafficking — rather than putting victims in jail. This gave birth to the “Genesis Project” where sheriff’s deputies offer potential victims of trafficking a comfortable safe haven with amenities for 24 hours, and put them in touch with social services for counselling, job training, and education advice.

Politicians from several states have sought to address the connection between tourism and human trafficking; Indiana’s state Senate unanimously passed a human trafficking bill on Tuesday morning. Current legislation only considered forced marriage and prostitution as human trafficking; loopholes in the existing laws allowed some forms of human trafficking to escape prosecution. Lawmakers in the state hope to toughen their human trafficking laws, and have new legislation on the statute books in time for the Super Bowl, due to be held in Indianapolis on February 5. The just-passed bill now goes to the House for approval.

Also on Tuesday, lawmakers from Hawaii held a special hearing on human trafficking. Kathryn Xian, of Pacific Alliance to Stop Slavery, says traffickers capitalize on the state’s tourist-based economy. She introduced a package of seven bills she says will help prevent human trafficking in the state.

At a national level, the US government continues to work abroad on the issue of trafficking; Luis CdeBaca, a special ambassador for human trafficking, is working with Myanmar, commonly known as Burma, as the country seeks to improve diplomatic relations with the United States. Myanmar was identified by the US State Department as having one of the worst records of forced labor, and as a country that lacks necessary laws to curb human trafficking.

Although National Human Trafficking Awareness Day is a US-based effort to recognise, and highlight, this issue — as a topic of global concern being highlighted through the United Nations, others around the world continue efforts to increase public awareness and tackle trafficking.

Forty-six women from the international group Operation Mobilization sought to raise awareness by climbing Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro. The summit is called “Uhuru Peak”, with Uhuru meaning “freedom” in Swahili. Each of the non-professional climbers raised US$10,000 to help those affected by human trafficking.

In the Middle East, several countries are reported to have problems with human traffickers recruiting unemployed gay Kenyan men to become sex slaves. Saudi Arabia and Qatar are supposedly the more-common destination countries into which Kenyans are lured with offers of high-paying jobs. However, in the United Arab Emirates — where no law prohibits trafficking, but homosexuality is illegal — the problem is compounded.

Enforcement of existing laws, and acting against trafficking, are seen as key steps in reducing the activity. Showing that no country is unaffected, Northern Ireland police are currently investigating five sex trafficking cases; and, on Monday, Filipino police rescued fifteen women following a tip-off regarding women recruited, and being held, prior to being sent to work abroad.

In the Northern Ireland situation, Detective Superintendent Philip Marshall stated that fifteen men are to be contacted, suspected of having paid for sex with trafficked women. Identifying victims within the UK, or victims seeking help, is becoming more challenging with the sex industry having switched to using hotel rooms as-opposed to street corners. Many victims of trafficking are found to be unaware of where within the country they are.

In the Philippines situation, Zamboanga City police are still seeking the recruiter of the fifteen women rescued in Rio Hondo.

A range of complexities are involved in the sentencing of both those convicted of human trafficking, and their victims. In one Canadian case, 43-year-old Hungarian Lajos Domotor pled guilty to trafficking men and women into forced labor. Following being charged with conspiracy to commit human trafficking, he developed terminal stomach cancer and has been given a 10 to 15 percent chance of living five years.

In the UK, officials are seeking to detect exploitation prior to sentencing — as a counter to the high number of foreign women in jails, frequently having been victims of trafficking. One in seven women prisoners across England and Wales are foreign, with the primary offenses being drug or immigration-related. A report into the issue recommends sentencing decisions should consider the role of women, and of coercion, in such cases.

Artists also have a special role to play in the education and awareness of the public. The first opera about sex trafficking will premiere in Liverpool, England, on March 7. Anya17 was composed by Adam Gorb with a libretto written by Ben Kaye. Performers will come from Manchester’s Royal Northern College of Music and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic contemporary music ensemble 10/10. Funding for the production was provided in part by the United Nations.

San Francisco & New York City office towers get new owner

Saturday, March 17, 2007

Vornado Realty Trust of Paramus NJ has completed a deal to take a majority interest in the 1.8 million sq ft building at 555 California St in San Francisco, (aka The Bank of America Center) and the 2 million sq. foot building located at 1290 Avenue of The Americas in New York City.

In an announced deal worth $1.8 billion, the new investors get a 70 percent interest in both towers, alleviating the current owners, Hudson Waterfront Associates of any possible liability in a lawsuit brought against them by Donald Trump.

Built in 1969, 555 California is SF’s largest office tower, and 2nd tallest building at 779 ft. just a few feet shy of the 48 story Transamerica Pyramid at 853 ft which was completed in 1972.

The SF structure, whose current deal estimates it’s value @ $575 per sq ft, had just sold last year for $1.05 Billion all by itself ($583 a sq ft), when property magnate Walter Shorenstein sold it to Henry Cheng and Vincent Lo’s Hong Kong based Hudson Waterfront Associates, a record for a city property.

Before 2005, 555 California had been Bank of America’s World HQ, but that status ended when North Carolina based NationsBank ate up A.P Giannini’s west coast banking legacy and kept the B of A name, but made the main HQ in Charlotte NC.

For lookee loos the 52nd floor of 555 California features the popular Carnelian Room, a hang for well to do bankers, brokers, lawyers and tourists checking out wide sweeping views from what was once the tallest structure west of the Mississippi, now only the 5th Tallest Bldg on the west coast, but still impressive. For those afraid of heights and the tab for “fine dining”, the ground floor also features a Starbucks.

Air Pacific re-brands as Fiji Airways

Saturday, June 29, 2013

Fiji’s national airline Air Pacific has now officially returned to its original name: Fiji Airways. Fiji Airways adopted the Air Pacific name in 1971, slightly prior to its first international flight on June 3, 1973. The re-brand was described by interim CEO Aubrey Swift as allowing the airline to align itself “closer with Fiji as a destination”. The name change is designed in part to reduce the confusion which surrounded the name Air Pacific. Swift noted that “Air Pacific just didn’t resonate with our customers” and said that same people “thought we were an air conditioning company”.

Along with the name change, the airline has redesigned its website, and changed the name of each of its classes of service. Pacific Voyager and Tabua Class have been replaced with economy and business class respectively. The airline has also introduced plans to overhaul its fleet of older Boeing 747s with Airbus A330s. It has said that the completion of this overhaul and the re-branding efforts will be completed by the end of the year.

The airline’s new brand-mark and livery features a masi design created by Fijian artist, Makereta Matemosi. The new identity is to “symbolises the airline’s new identity and epitomises all that Fiji Airways represents. It is authentic, distinctive, and true to the airline’s Fijian roots”, the airline said.

Scoop The Poop And Save The World!

Scoop the Poop and Save the World!

by

Eric Eckl

Do you want to do your part for a cleaner environment and a healthier neighborhood? If you have yard — and a dog that plays on it — then making a difference is easier than you think.

Here’s a dirty little secret that most people don’t know: Dog doo causes water pollution. That’s right, dog doo. It’s full of germs that can make people and animals sick. Water scientists find that in some waterways, as much as 25% of the disease-causing germs they find come from pet waste. Think about that the next time you see that “no swimming” sign at an inviting-looking local lake.

You’ve probably never seen a pet owner throw dog doo directly into the water, so you might wonder “how these germs get there?” The answer is that the rain carries it there. Everytime it rains, the water runoff carries dog doo across the ground, into the street, and down the storm drain into local creeks, rivers, and eventually, the Chesapeake Bay.

You may not even realize it, but every time you scoop the poop when you’re out walking the dog, you’re being a good environmental citizen doing your part to prevent water pollution. And you probably thought you were just being a good neighbor!

But here’s an important point — dog doo left on your yard causes water pollution just the same as dog doo left on the sidewalk or in a public place. Dog doo is not a natural part of your area’s ecosystem, especially not in the amounts found in a normal neighborhood. Wild animals spread their waste over wide areas. But on the average quarter acre yard, the bacteria levels from dog doo can build up fast!

It would be great if dog doo was good fertilizer for your lawn or garden — like cow or chicken manure — but those little brown spots of dead grass tell us that it’s not. Unlike cows and chickens, dogs’ diets — and their waste — have high concentrations of protein. Dog doo “burns” the soil and kills grass.

So here’s what you can do to protect your yard and the local waterways where children play and animals live: pick up the dog doo when you walk your dog AND when he or she “goes” in the yard. You know the drill — scoop the poop in a plastic bag, tie it shut, and toss it in the trash. Your friendly neighborhood sanitation workers will take care of it from there.

And you don’t have to do it yourself, if you don’t want to. All you have to do is run a quick Google search for “poop scoop service,” and you will find plenty of local businesses eager to take that chore off your hands. Expect prices to start at $50 per month, and go up from there depending on how big your yard is, how many dogs you have, and how often you want the poop scoop service to come by.

Green grass and clean water. Do your part for both of these — pick up after your dog when you take it for a walk AND from the yard around your house.
