Irish inflation creeps upwards to 2.4%

Saturday, June 11, 2005

The inflation rate in Ireland, as measured by the Central Statistics Office (CSO), edged upwards to hit a five month high in May at 2.4%. This represents a 0.2% rise on the previous month when the rate stood at 2.2%.

The major contributors to the rise were increased transportation, healthcare, and education costs. In April the EU25 average rate of inflation was 2.1%, with Latvia having the highest rate at 7.1% and Sweden the lowest at 0.4%.

Despite the increase in the rate, Irish inflation remains very low – having hit 7% during 2000 and remaining around the 5% until the beginning of 2003. Another major factor easing any worries about the increase is Ireland’s very strong GDP growth – expected to be around 5.5% this year

On an annual basis the cost of footwear and clothing have fallen by 2.7% whilst energy costs have soared by 10.4%. The cost of food, furniture, and communications also fell over the last 12 months.

The Consumer Price Index is made up of over 55,000 prices consisting of 613 headings which cover over 1,000 different items.

San Storage

San Storage

by

Gareth Hoyle1

When you run a business there is often a need to store data and information securely. In the past this has just been stored on a part of the PC that is password protected. This is fine however it doesn t make it 100% secure. It also means that your PC s hard drive can become quickly filled up with data that you don t need to access regularly.

One way around this is to look up different SAN storage methods. Storage area network (SAN) is a server that is attached to remote computer data storage devices. This could be something such as tape libraries, optical jukeboxes and disk arrays.

As a general rule a SAN has a networking of storage devices, separate to anything else so that are not accessed by regular devices.

Many businesses assume that the cost of setting up and running a SAN storage facility is going to be too expensive. This was true 10 years ago however since then the price of them has dropped making them much more affordable for every day businesses.

No one is expecting you to be an expert in the field; however that doesn t mean you can t run a SAN storage facility in your company. It just means that you will need to contact an expert company for advice. When you contact a specialist company you can tell them exactly what you are after and they should be able to offer up a range of storage methods that suit exactly what you are looking for. There is plenty of choice which means finding something to suit the size of your business and the budget that you have available should not be too much of a struggle.

Getting the correct storage for your business is essential, in fact having the wrong storage can end up costing you money in the long run, especially if your storage methods are not stable and you end up losing money if data gets corrupted or lost. That is just one of the reasons why decent, reliable and secure storage is so essential and why you should contact an expert company to help set this up for you.

Air France jet with 228 on board goes missing

Monday, June 1, 2009

Air France Flight 447 carrying 228 people from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport is reported missing off the Brazilian coast. The flight was scheduled to arrive in Paris at 11:10 CET on June 1, 2009.

The Airbus A330-200 was last heard via radio at 22:30 local time (01:30 GMT). The Brazilian Air Force is confirming the disappearance of the aircraft, which vanished from radar approximately 190 miles (306 km) off the Brazilian coast. Reuters reports that an electrical short circuit during turbulence may have caused the plane to plunge into the Atlantic Ocean. The plane with registration F-GZCP has totalled 18,870 flight hours and went into service on 18 April 2005. Its last maintenance check was on April 16, 2009.

“We have received no news from flight AF447,” said Air France in a statement. The plane was carrying 12 crew members and 216 passengers, of which 126 men, 82 women, 7 children and one infant.

In a press communiqué, Air France stated that AF447 had encountered an area of heavy turbulence at 02:00 GMT and that the aircraft had sent an automatic message indicating an electric failure at 02:14 UTC.

Search and rescue operations by the Brazilian Air Force are to be initially centered on the island of Fernando de Noronha. The aircraft has been missing for a sufficient time that it will no longer have any fuel remaining if it was airborne.

French President Sarkozy said the prospects of finding survivors are “very small”. He also requested that America use their surveillance satellites to assist in locating the plane.

Air France has provided three telephone numbers for the families and friends of those on board AF447:

 • 0800 800 812 for calls from within France
 • 0800 881 20 20 for calls from Brazil
 • +33 1 57 02 10 55, for calls from outside France or Brazil.

A “specially reserved area” of Charles de Gaulle airport’s Terminal 2 is being used to care for the families of those on board AF447.

One of the most challenging things for non techie webmasters to do is to monetize a website or blog. For many people, it is pointless to run a website or blog if the entire exercise does not pay for itself, somehow. The best way to monetize a website is without doubt via Google’s Adsense program.

Google Adsense allows website owner’s to earn revenue by running Google Ads on their website. Revenue is earned anytime one of those ads is clicked by a user. Google shares the revenue with the owner of the website with the owner getting the bulk of the profits. When earnings reach a predetermined level, usually $100, Google sends a check to the webmaster at the end of their monthly accounting cycle. Implementing Google Adsense on a website requires some HTML knowledge. Clearly, this can be quite discouraging for website owner’s who know next to nothing about HTML. As a result they have to incur expensive fees hiring web designers to do it for them. For WordPress users, Quick Adsense comes to the rescue. Quick Adsense allows webmasters to quickly integrate Google Adsense on their websites. Some of the features of Quick Adsense include: You can assign ads to any section of your page of post Simple interface You can incorporate any other advertisement code in addition to Adsense You can show up to ten ads on a page despite the Google maximum of three Adsense blocks Sidebar can support up to 10 ad codes Shortcodes to ‘call’ ads when posting by using the ‘Quick tags’ feature How to use it To install the plugin, search for it in the plugins pages of the WordPress dashboard using the search terms ‘Quick Adsense’. Install and activate the plugin and then proceed to the settings page where you will make some configurations and customizations as follows: Adsense – select the number of ads to place on a page Position – select the positions of the ads Quicktag – tick ‘how Quicktag Buttons on the HTML Edit Post SubPanel’ Adsense Codes – in this section you will need to paste the ad codes from Google. To get your ad codes, it is assumed you already have an approved Adsense account with Google. If you do not, then first apply for one at Adsense.google.com. It will take about one week for the guys at Google to approve your website provided you conform to their content guidelines. If you already have an Adsense account, log into your account and click on ‘get ads’. Follow the instructions to get an ad code. Copy the code and paste it in the field ‘Ads 1’. Repeat the process to populate as many ad fields as you want. Do the same for ‘Ads on Sidebar Widget’ and save the changes. Once you have done the above, Google Ads will begin running on your website and you will begin earning revenue. Quick Adsense

Teen broadcasts suicide online

Sunday, November 23, 2008

A Pembroke Pines, Florida teenager killed himself Wednesday, November 19, while broadcasting on the live video site Justin.tv. After making suicide threats and being encouraged by Justin.tv viewers and Bodybuilding.com forum members, Abraham K. Biggs, 19, committed suicide by taking an overdose of opiates and benzodiazepine, which had been prescribed for his bipolar disorder.

Biggs first began blogging about his planned suicide 12 hours before the actual event. He died after taking pills and lying on the bed in front of the webcam. After the broadcast, viewers who apparently thought it was a hoax posted messages such as “OMG”, “LOL”, and “hahahah”.

Hours later, after being alerted by viewers who had noticed that Biggs had stopped breathing, law enforcement and paramedics arrived, discovered his body, and covered the camera. The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office has reportedly confirmed Biggs’ death.

According to Montana Miller of the Bowling Green State University, the circumstances of this case were not shocking: “If it’s not recorded or documented, then it doesn’t even seem worthwhile. For today’s generation it might seem, ‘What’s the point of doing it if everyone isn’t going to see it?'”

Biggs’ sister Rosalind was angry that neither the website nor its viewers reacted soon enough to save him. “They got hits, they got viewers, nothing happened for hours,” she said. She described him as “very happy” and “friendly and outgoing.” “On a normal day, you couldn’t really tell that he got as low as he did.” However, he did have relationship problems with his girlfriend, according to a friend.

Mental health professionals have warned about the possibility that other mentally troubled people would copy his actions. According to Dr. David Shaffer of Columbia University, “Any video showing it as heroic or romantic or glamorous could reduce the anxiety people might feel about suicide. It becomes a respectable behavior and lowers the threshold of suicide.” He and other psychiatrists recommend that potentially suicidal teens talk to others and “tell what’s going on.”

‘Net Neutrality Amendment’ fails in U.S. House

Saturday, June 10, 2006

On Thursday, Congress turned down the “Net Neutrality Amendment” to the Communications Opportunity, Promotion, and Enhancement Act (COPE Act) 269-152.

The COPE Act is designed to make it easier for telecommunications companies to offer cable TV service and strengthen competition. Proponents hope it would lower the price of high-speed Internet for consumer by enabling Internet service providers to bundle phone, data, video and mobile phone services. The act is the first major telecommunications bill to come before Congress in over a decade, and it passed by 321-101 vote on Thursday.

Portions of the “Net Neutrality” amendment to the COPE Act sought to assure that communication companies who provide Internet services treated all data delivery passing through their connections equally. It specified that each broadband provider has the duty “not to block, impair, degrade, discriminate against, or interfere with the ability of any person to use a broadband connection to access, use, send, receive, or offer lawful content, applications, or services over the Internet.” The amendment’s passage would have prevented AT&T, Verizon, Comcast and other broadband providers from charging content providers like Google, Yahoo, Amazon or eBay for priority access to their networks. Democrats were largely in favour of the legislation with 140 Ayes and 58 Noes, whereas only 11 Republicans voted for the measure, with 211 against.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi argued that “The imposition of additional fees for Internet content providers would unduly burden Web-based small businesses and start-ups,” and that “They would also hamper communications by noncommercial users, those using religious speech, promoting civic involvement and exercising First Amendment freedoms.”

The phone companies and their Congressional allies argued that the restrictions in the amendment would discourage investment in upgrading networks. Chief technology officer for BellSouth William L. Smith told the Washington Post that telephone companies should be able to charge companies for having their content load faster than that of competitors. “If I go to the airport, I can buy a coach standby ticket or a first-class ticket,” Smith said. “In the shipping business, I can get two-day air or six-day ground.”

The legislation has been subject to intense lobbying by telecommunication companies on one side, and content providers on the other. The bill is due to be discussed next in the Senate, where lobbying efforts from both sides are expected to intensify. The White House said that it supports the current bill.
