Many people think that driving tired is just a part of life. Whether it s driving early in the morning to get to work or driving through the night during a long road trip, drivers will brush off the effects of driving tired as a necessary evil; a means to get where they need to go. In reality tired driving can be extremely dangerous. In fact according to infrastructure.gov, 30% of fatal crashes are caused by tired driving and nearly 15% of serious injuries injuries that require hospital visits are also caused by tired driving. The site also claims that driver fatigue can be just as dangerous as drunk driving or excessive speeding. Yet, more often than not, drivers will convince themselves that driving tired is not dangerous. If you are driving tired and you tell yourself one of the three things listed below then you may need to pull over and take a nap:

Coffee will keep me Awake

Coffee s active ingredient caffeine will keep you awake, for a short time. But the fact remains that once the effects of the caffeine wear off you will be left more tired than before you had a cup of coffee. The same can be said about all caffeinated beverages. At first usually 30 minutes after drinking it a caffeinated beverage will give you a jolt of energy. But eventually your alertness will wear off and you will be even more tired than before. It is also important to note that according to WebMD, drinking coffee while you are driving tired will have little effect on regular coffee drinkers.

The fact of the matter is that caffeine is not effective enough to keep you awake long enough if you are driving tired. According to My Sleep Apnea, you can still lapse into mini sleeps around 4 or 5 seconds if you are seriously sleep deprived while driving even if you drink coffee. If you are driving tired and you believe that consuming coffee, or any caffeinated drink, will wake you up long enough to drive safely, you should pull over and take a nap.

Rolling down the Window or Turning on the AC will keep me Awake

Many people believe that rolling down a window or turning on cold air conditioning will wake them up if they are tired while driving. This is also not true. In fact, decreasing the temperature in your car is likely to make you sleepier. According to My Health Today, you sleep better when you are in a cool environment.

Changing the temperature in your car, either hotter or colder, will not help you stay awake if you are driving tired. If you re tired enough your body will begin to fall asleep, no matter how cold you make your surroundings.

Loud Music will keep me Awake

Another common myth for tired drivers is that loud music will keep you awake while driving. Much like a blasting cold air through your air conditioning or a drinking a strong cup of coffee, listening to loud music will provide your system a jolt. But much like all other tired driving remedies this solution only works temporarily. If you find yourself reaching for the volume knob to keep you awake then it is time to pull over.

There is little you can do to keep yourself awake if you are driving tired. The fact remains that if you are tired enough your body will get the sleep it needs, no matter what. If you try drinking coffee, blasting cold air through the air conditioning or playing loud music then you are driving tired, then you could be a danger to yourself and others on the road. If this happens to you, pull over and take a short nap. That is the most effective temporary measure to ward off fatigue while driving, but again it is only temporary. The best way to keep from driving tired is to get at least 7-9 hours of sleep a night.

Ukrainian manufacturer preparing to sell Adolf Hitler dolls

Thursday, April 24, 2008

Correction — May 3, 2008 This article has been retracted. This article has been deemed a hoax. Please see the follow up article, Hitler doll story found to be hoaxed, for more information.

News reports are claiming that dolls depicting former Nazi leader Adolf Hitler will go on sale in Ukraine. These reports cite Ukraine’s Zerkalo Nedeli newspaper which reported that a toy manufacturer would release the line of Hitler dolls in the summer.

The 40cm doll will reportedly first be available in Kiev with a £100 (GBP) price tag and comes with a large range of accessories in a presentation box with the dates of Hitler’s birth and death.

Nazis images are illegal in Ukraine, with positive portrayal specifically banned. However, there are allegations that right-wing nationalist politics are gaining strength in the country and that xenophobia and racism are on the rise, including some said to be comparable to that present in Germany under Nazi rule. Fascism and propaganda are also banned.

When the former Soviet Union, including Ukraine, was invaded by Germany under Hitler’s rule 2–3 million Ukrainians were among the casualties, of which 1.5 million were Jews.

Adolf can be dressed in various guises, including “early days Adolf”, which consists of a brown shirt and jodhpurs, and “Wartime Adolf”, which features a grey tunic, black trousers and the Iron Cross medal. The doll also comes with boots and shoes, caps, gloves, full uniforms, cane and belt which can be placed on Hitler, whose arms move, allowing the doll to replicate the famed salute of its real life counterpart.

Kids can undress fuhrer, pin on medals and there’s a spare head in the kit to give him a kinder expression on his face

Also included is a model of Blondi, Hitler’s female German Shepherd, who was exceedingly loyal to Hitler. Hitler poisoned Blondi with cyanide in 1945 at the same time as taking his own life in his bunker at Berlin.

“It is like Barbie. Kids can undress fuhrer, pin on medals and there’s a spare head in the kit to give him a kinder expression on his face. He has glasses that are round, in the manner of pacifist John Lennon,” said one saleswoman. The company, which will release the dolls in Summer, says that if demand is high a range of toys themed on the Third Reich may be released, to include barracks, working models of crematoriums and gas chambers, concentration camps and interior models of the chancellery.

The doll is not set to be released until the summer, but BBC News Online has footage suggesting that some stores are selling the doll already.

Keeping Fit With A Few Simple Ideas}

If you’re thinking about picking up cooking, but aren’t sure what to do and where to start, then you’ve come to the right place. When it comes to cooking the more knowledge you gain, the more you have to apply towards making a great meal. Knowledge such as contained in this article can help you to become a better cook.

For the most beautiful homemade chocolate chip cookies, do not add all of the chocolate morsels into the mix! Save about a quarter of what your recipe calls for until after the cookies are all arranged on the cooking sheet, then add them evenly to the tops of the dough drops to create bakery looking, perfect chocolate chip cookies!

You should not boil pasta in water that has oil in it. When you add oil to the water that you are boiling your pasta in it keeps the sauce from sticking to the pasta. By leaving the oil out you can toss your pasta in the sauce and it will cling to it.

As you cook your meal during the course of the night, make sure that you taste it at several different points. This will allow you to pinpoint exactly when it is done, so that you do not run the risk of overcooking it. Tasting your food is important to achieve the quality you desire.

If you are cooking pasta and are tired of the same taste, you can add a hint of lemon. Lemon will give it the extra taste that you desire, and this additive is also a very powerful antioxidant. Adding spices and different flavors can help improve the quality of your meals.

Make sure you are storing your spices in the right place. Many people store their spices right above their stove or near a light source. To stay fresh, put them in dry and dark spot that is cool. Humidity can also destroy spices so keep those several factors in mind.

Although it may be a little bit more expensive, it is wise to get a high-quality olive oil. Just a small amount can help to bring out the flavor meat, fish, pasta, pizza, or whatever else you are making. Cheaper olive oils usually give food a less than desirable flavor.

When you are going to purchase beef, make sure that the package does not have too much liquid in it. An excessive amount of liquid may indicate that the beef was not stored properly or that it is no longer good. Make sure you always check the expiration date as well.

If you are making french fries, you want that crispy outside. A trick to getting this is to let your raw potatoes sit in cold water for at least thirty minutes before you put them in the fryer. That will give you that lovely golden crunchy outside, and the soft inside that is favored.

Before frying raw potatoes, let them sit in cold water for at least a half an hour. By doing this, the fries will be more crispy. Also, letting them sit in cold water will cut down on the time it takes for them to cook thoroughly.

To stay on top of the mess that comes with cooking, wash your dishes as soon as you are done using them. Fill your sink with hot water and soap on one side and clean water to rinse your dishes on the other. Your utensils and containers wash up easier the sooner you get to them, and washing them as you go also allows you to re-use them while preparing the same recipe.

Put food into a hot pan instead of trying to cook it while the pan is still cold. The pan should already be at the desired temperature before you start cooking. This will ensure that the food is cooked evenly and thoroughly. You want to see the steam rising off the pan when you start cooking.

With all of the information you just learned you should start feeling more confident in your cooking abilities. So try and form strategies you can use towards becoming a better cook from the tips you learned in this article. The only ways you’re going to see success is if you actually try.

Australians unite against whaling in Southern Ocean

Wednesday, January 18, 2006File:Greenpeace Vessels Esperanza and Arctic Sun.jpg

Anti-whaling protesters have joined forces across Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, and the U.S.A calling for an end to the killing of whales for meat by Japan. Greenpeace organised the international day of action as it continued its efforts to disrupt the hunting of minke whales by the Japanese whaling fleet currently in the Southern Ocean.

The day of action was being marked to protest the actions of the fleet which protesters believe violate the 1986 International Whaling Commission (IWC) global ban on commercial whaling. Japan’s JARPA Japanese Whale Research Program was allowed to operate under a Special Permit in the Antarctic according to Article VIII of the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling. In its JARPA-2 plan, Japan plans to double its annual scientific research catch of Minke whales to 935, and to add 10 Fin whales to its quota. The International Fund for Animal Welfare states that over the next two years, Japan plans to kill 50 endangered Humpback whales and an additional 40 fin whales.

BBC Radio 1 reverses “faggot” ruling hours after initial ban

Tuesday, December 18, 2007

BBC Radio 1 bosses have today reversed their decision to censor the word “faggot” from the 20 year old Fairytale of New York song by The Pogues. The initial censoring of the song caused controversy recently as the song had been played for 20 years without censoring, and resulted in many people contacting the BBC saying the decision was “ridiculous”. The ban was also ridiculed for the fact that it only applied to Radio 1 and not to Radio 2 or any other station on the BBC network.

The Radio 1 management made the initial decision saying “We are playing an edited version because some members of the audience might find it offensive” and thus the word faggot was disguised from “you scumbag, you maggot, you cheap lousy faggot”. The word “slut” from the line “you’re an old slut on junk” was also censored.

A further meeting was held today in which the management decided to stick by their initial decision, however at around 18.00 (UTC) a breaking news bulletin, from Andy Parfitt the controller of Radio 1, was read out during the Scott Mills show, saying that the decision was “wrong” and that the full song would be played un-edited in future.

Neolithic noodles found in Qinghai, China

Friday, October 14, 2005

Chinese archaeologists at the Lajia Ruins in the Qinghai province of China have discovered well-preserved millet noodles dating back to the neolithic age. The 4,000-year-old noodles were found underneath an upturned bowl that had been buried in three meters of sediment, consisting of brownish-yellow clay. The sediment is thought to have been caused by a devastating flood of the upper Mekong.

This discovery significantly reframes the debate over which people first made noodles, establishing Chinese culture—at least for now—as the most likely candidate for having originally developed the idea of making noodles. Previously, Italian, Chinese, and Arab cultures have all been claimed as the originator of noodles. Prior to this discovery, the oldest record of noodles existing in China were from 1900-year-old recipes.

The Lajia Ruins are of a central Qijia settlement, which has been the site of other significant discoveries, such as the largest stone chime ever found in China, and the largest and most intact prehistoric oven found in Northwestern China. The site has also been significant to researchers studying the impact of natural disasters on ancient civilizations—it was the site of a cataclysmic flood, and at least one major earthquake.

Computer Security Tips For Safe Public Pc Use

Submitted by: Deepesh Agarwal

In the new computer age, We don’t always log on from home where our PC’s are thoroughly protected. (You took care of that already, right?) Cyber cafes, libraries, airports, hotels and other places offer use of a public terminal for those on the go. But, unfortunately, those computers may not always get secured well nor checked regularly. And, since others use them, they can get infected only minutes before it’s your turn.

Here are a few tips for how to protect your information while using a public computer.

Most of the email clients nowadays allow you to forward email from one account to another, just as you forward your phone calls. Take advantage of this feature to enhance your security.

If you plan to be away from home for a few days – but aren’t using your regular computer or laptop – try to forward your email to an account you set up especially for the trip. This helps protect your information a lot.

Both the account and the password are much less likely to be known to scam artists. Yet, you can retrieve any email sent while you’re away from your regular PC. Also, if the userid and password do get cracked, your ongoing risk is low, since you’ll be abandoning this temporary account shortly.

If you have to log in to a public computer with one of your regular username change the password the first time you use it away from home. Then change it back when you get back home, This limits your exposure time.

Public computers can contain a specific kind of spyware/trojan called ‘a key-logger’ that records your every keystroke. Apart from getting your logins and passwords, that also allows the thief to access anything else you typed in during your session. So, you must avoid making credit-card transactions online or accessing your online banking and credit-card accounts.

Before you go to any site that would require a username and/or password, disable any auto-complete or password storing feature. If you can because some public computers have these features locked down by the administrator.

Avoid unfamiliar sites, if practical, while you are away. Most online hacks come from auto-downloads of spyware, viruses, etc. Few of the sites you visit regularly are likely to have those. Just as you would avoid talking to unsavory strangers while on a trip, avoid dicey websites.

Defer clicking on ads while you’re away from home. Those can lead to just the kinds of sites mentioned above.

Once you are done using the public computer, erase – if you can – here again administrators may not allow you to access the feature – any Temporary Internet files, cookies, etc. This helps protect not only you, but leaves the computer in a better state for the next user.

Needless to say, don’t leave any downloaded files on the computer and never allow anyone to look over your shoulder while you are typing in a password or other sensitive information.

Paranoia isn’t needed. But a little awareness and sound judgment while using a public computer will help keep your information secure – then and after you get back home.

One last tip would be to use a better secure browser like Firefox or Opera while surfing on your home PC as well as a public computer.

Detroit chemical plant experiences explosions, fire; residents evacuated

Wednesday, August 10, 2005

All residents within a half-mile radius of the EQ Resource Recovery chemical plant in southeastern Michigan were asked to voluntarily evacuate on Tuesday due to a chemical plant explosion. ClickOnDetroit reported that nearby residents who choose to stay were told to close their doors and windows.

The plant, located in Romulus, near Wayne, is about 15 miles southwest of Detroit. Initial reports stated that a single explosion in a chemical tank was the cause of the fire. The cause of this explosion has not yet been determined. Detroit ABC affiliate WXYZ confirmed that all employees made it out of the plant before the explosion occurred, and that HAZMAT teams were on the scene of the fire. Wayne County Sheriff Warren Evans announced that no injuries were reported in the initial explosion. However, approximately 32 people were treated for breathing problems at nearby Oakwood Annapolis Hospital, due to the subsequent fire.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) analyzed soot in the area and determined that it did not pose a substantial health risk. The company in question has been the target of numerous enforcement actions by the EPA in the past, including a $240,000 fine in 1999. A major chemical processed at the plant is acetone, the main ingredient in nail polish remover, which is known to be toxic in high dosages, especially to those with lung conditions. Acetone is also an eye and skin irritant. Other chemicals, such as antifreeze, are also processed there. Two Detroit-area law firms have filed class action lawsuits against EQ Resource Recovery on behalf of local residents, and a third is considering similar action.

Romulus is the site of the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW), the primary airport for the Detroit area and a hub for Northwest Airlines. However, airport service was not affected. News of this explosion came as a chemical plant explosion in Story City, Iowa happened just a day before and three similar explosions in Texas occurred July 28.
